Listen to this it works and ignore the complicated stuff.

"hold the lock button, and press the unlock twice"

Exactly the procedure to put it to sleep. Red LED will flash 4 times on the fob. I do this for the Key to my wife's Rav to save the battery on the fob I carry in my Tacoma.
Touching any of the buttons will awaken it.

FYI.....you can place the fob in sleep mode (turns battery off) and it will not communicate with the start button.

As has been posted, its a normal procedure to leave the fob on the car if you need to. My dealer suggested doing this "if you are going kayaking, etc.... and don't want to risk submerging the fob....."

This thread is too much. There is no special procedure, you do not have to sing a lullaby to the key FOB. Just take key out of FOB, put fob in truck, lock drivers door from the outside using the key that was taken out of FOB, done.

Correct! The key fob is actually deactivated when you take the key out. Try it yourself. Lock the door manually, keep the key out of the fob and try to open the door. Fob no workee sans key.

I've never tried the outside door handle lock/unlock with the key removed from the fob I do know the start function still works.
When I take her Rav into the dealer I pull the fob from her keychain leaving the door key with her.
Look inside and you should see the little key light somewhere on the dash indicating key is detected.

Yeah, you're right. The start function is not neutralized when the key is removed. The lock / unlock function is inhibited but you can still start the car. However, I'm fairly comfortable locking the fob in the car with the key. I guess someone could still steal it....

You can put it into sleep mode as I described earlier and hide the key inside then no one could break in and be smart enough to put their foot on the brake pedal and hit the start button and steal your vehicle.;)

Tried that with our 2015 Rav4 this morning does not work. Key out but Fob in hand and outside lock controls all function.
    So back to post #62.
