2 days of ownership and 600 miles later, the little things that bother me

So I picked my truck up on Saturday morning at 9am. Since then I have put 600 miles on it driving around running errands and going to work. So far I love this thing. I will start off with the are little things that I wish were different but I will learn to live with them.

    1) No change pocket (like on the Camrys or Tundras)
    2) No gas cap holder (going to add one aftermarket)
    3) Only 1 USB port. Wish they would have added 1 more in the arm rest
    4) You need to use the "valet key" to lock the tailgate and glove box. Your normal laser cut key with the remote doesn't work... WTF so now I have to carry the other key in the glove box.
    5) No seat adjustment. Forward and back, lean forward and back just doesn't do it. May add some front risers later on. I like to slide a bit back into the seat when I sit down.
    6) EDITED: LEDs look better now with the HIDs installed at night. The Halogen headlights were washing out the LED coloring. This no longer bothers me.
    7) No automatic headlights. (on the TRD Sport without Tech/JBL)
    8) No illuminated gauge light if the lights are off. Driving through dark tunnels you are blacked out on the interior.
    9) Bed d-rings (tie down points) wish they had some higher up. The lower ones are useless when hauling higher stuff.
    10) No fast key lock/unlock option on the passenger side.
    11) No power for the first 1-2k RPMs but it picks up (without ECT mode) but this is for the best to help me with speeding and my mpgs.

Now, I do not have the same problems others are reporting. I do not have the whirling at 30-60, my hood does not vibrate, etc. Cab is nice and quite, standard stereo sounds perfect no need to upgrade.

On my first fill-up (75% highway 25% streets), by doing math my MPG was 17.9. Avg MPG from the truck stated 16.2. Little spirited driving so this next tank will be all cruising.

Overall I love this truck. My past cars have been:

1987 Oldsmobile Calais (chick magnet. My very first car)
    2002 Civic LX
    2008 Silverado 1500 LS
    2008 Mitsubishi Evo X
    2009 HHR SS
    2010 Mazdaspeed 3

I work in the auto industry and I have driven 75% of every make and model vehicle from the year 2009-present. The ride of the 2016 Tacoma reminds me a lot of the 2015. I dont really feel much of a difference in the ride. The turning radius is actually pretty good for it being a long bed double cab. We have a 2015 Colorado on our lot as a loan vehicle and the Tacoma blows it out of the water. So much more comfortable and its not falling apart leaving the dealers lot (Colorado had 2 bolts fall off from the dash when we got it back to the office) Overall besides those 11 things I am extremely happy with this thing. I was contemplating getting another "sports car" but I am glad I didn't.

If you have a 2012+ 2nd gen, I would wait a couple more years before trading up. Its all aesthetics and a little quieter cab. Get a little more out of your truck and let the little kinks people are running into get worked out.

So far my upgrades/mods/addons or whatever you want to call them are

Dark Window Tint - Front , Medium Window Tint - Rear (doing this, you get a matching dark all around) and medium front window visor tint (to help hide the dash cam)
LED interior, license plate, reverse, and fog lights. HIDs are on order.
Pace Edwards Full Metal rolling tonneau cover (mounting bike 15mm fork mounts this weekend)
Hard wired Valentine 1 radar detector to the rear view mirror
Mobius Dash Cam (going to run a hard wire USB connector to the pillar to plug this in)

It has been raining in SoCal so when it stops, Ill snap some pics.

Dude... I'm freaking out right now. #7... Is that just your particular version? I could swear I had an "Auto" on my lights when I brought my truck home tonight. Did I leave my freaking lights on? I'm in bed and thinking about going out to the driveway to check.

The small cup holders and no change holder irritates me the most.

Bad news: Its cold, rainy, and 1:41am.

Good news: I have auto headlights. I had a valid excuse to go out to my new truck at 1:41am

It will auto shut off in about 30 seconds or so (depending on your setting), when you lock your car. However, my brother drove my truck and manually switched it off, after turning the engine off. Then I told him, he doesn't need to do that cause it will shut off automatically. So he turned it back on. We went into a store and came back with the light still on... So I learned that as long as you leave it on after shutting the engine off. It will automatically shut it off for you in 30 seconds. but if you turn it off/ or switch modes then turn it back on. The auto feature is not gonna work. Kinda confusing but better try it your self.

You're complaining about the DRLs shutting off when the headlights are on... They're daytime running lights not 24/7 running lights.

LEDs put out a very intense light, go turn on your truck at night and stare at them and you'll realize why they switch off

Luck you. I read the brochure and i thought "Auto" is a standard feature on a TRD sport. Then i drove it home then realized, I dont have it unless i probably bought the tech package or something. The auto shut off is standard but the real "Auto sensing headlights", i don't have. It feels like a downgrade from my 14 accord.

I'm the guy who puts it in auto and leaves it there. However... My wife "doesn't trust it" (how is that even a thing) on her Camry and tends to manually activate and save her lights. Kills me. Good to know she might play with my trucks lights and set me up for a dead battery. Thanks for the heads up.

Number 8 is because to many people look at their dash lights as an indication that the headlights are on, seen many 2nd gens running around with DRL's on (not parking lights) because they didn't realize the headlights weren't on and the dash was illuminated.

You should be able to leave them on all the time, when the engine (key) is off and the drivers door opens the lights should automatically shut off.

#2, there is a post about this. You can put the gascap tether in the gasdoor latch.
#6, the 3 tacomas i drove had crisp white drl while driving not halogen like mentioned. Maybe contact your dealer.
#7 , there is an automatic headlight feature depending on your trim level.

the rest of the issues i completely agree with, main ones being the valet key for tailgate, and the seat adjustment.
Hope this clears up any issues for yourself, newcomers or people browsing.

lol... My Tahoe (LEO package) has the "Auto" on the dial, however it is disabled for blackout mode. My rooks often leave the dang headlights on when we park or drive around without lights because they think the headlights will come on by themselves. I need to just put a dang piece of electrical tape over the Tahoes "auto".

Should of just got a Limo with a wet bar, 3 Bazillion in the bank and a hungry blond with no teeth. No worries. :annoyed:

My 2014 has a rattle, poor gas mileage, hard to climb into due to my bad back and looks friggin awesome. I know, we have stuff we don't like.

I don't want to de-rail the thread, but I have a question. This has been bugging me a while now. My dealer has lost the keys and so they were only able to give me one key on delivery. They're supposed to make me a new key soon, but they have failed twice now...

This one key does everything though. I can lock the tailgate and the glove compartment, and it's also able to open the doors and start the car. Does that mean I have the valet key? It doesn't make sense for the valet key to be superior.... I'm confused. Can someone take a photo of their keys including the valet key?

I have the keyless start. Might be different. My truck came with two fobs (with the built in real keys) and a tailgate key in the glovebox. At least I think just one tailgate key... I haven't been all through the glovebox yet.

I see. Mine is a manual, so the keyless start was not an option. The same physical key starts the truck and opens the tailgate for me.
