    Hi everyone,

I just came across this article on KBB and found it really interesting. Not everybody might care but its good to know that the car we enjoy and work hard for holds it value firmly.

I am one of those people who can't just own one car and own it for a very long time. The 2016 Tacoma I own now is my first truck. I owned a fairly new 2014 Honda Accord with low miles, stopped by a Toyota dealer on my day off just to look around, and you can guess what happened next. I was upside down and lost a good amount of money on my trade, but even with my loan amount now, if the KBB, prediction is right, I will not be upside down anymore the next time I decide to upgrade to another car in a few years.

KBB estimates the tacoma resale value to be about 72.9% in 36 months and 61.7% in 5 years.

Everybody is telling me that this will be the car I will want to own for atleast 5 years upto a good 10 year period. I can't say that I agree with them yet but I am loving my 3rd gen so far!

How long do you guys think will you own your 3rd gen tacoma?

Considering the Canyon and Colorado are at #3 and #4, I'm not sure how seriously I can take that list.

Re Tundra vs. Sierra, ~7% @ 3yr & ~5+% @ 5yr delta for resale value = $3,500 & $2,500 in the Trundras favor (depending on actual price) and people are concerned with a MPG.

I was willing to take the drop in MPG when i got a Toyota. The reliability and better resale value makes me not think about MPG. But I do have to be honest and say that I am still adjusting from a 30mpg accord to a 16.9mpg tacoma. Switching from Premium to regular gas sort of made up for the difference. lol

Tacoma has been top 2 or top 3 on Kbb for about a decade now. Its basically between Jeep Wrangler and Tacoma

I guess these are all calculations based on the history of the demand and real prices on the used car market for these vehicles. Any recall or major issue that may arise can drastically bring these down. Dealers have these kinds of "estimate/predictions" too. That's why they are able to give you a purchase price when you car lease ends. Honda initially signed a buy back guarantee for my Accord for $18,000 in 3 years and at 36,000 miles, right when I bought it with 0 miles. However, I just decided to let go of my car at the same price in 22 months at 23,000 miles just because I know the value of my car is just gonna drop more drastically with the 2016 accord coming out. Plus, I just couldn't resist this tacoma at the dealership.

I have not been following KBB records. Hearing about the Jeep wrangler being a competitor on that category is totally new to me. It was even surprising that the Best Resale Brand award goes to Subaru. I do have a huge respect for all the research that they do, so I'm just gonna believe them.

I never realized working graveyard shifts give me a lot of extra time on the internet.

    Exactly.

For the extra (maybe) $3,500 in the Tundra over the Sierra after three years I can buy a lot of gas. It would work for me cos I don't keep'em too long...let alone the reliability factors.

Did you put premium in your Accord?

I'd like to know how resale is calculated so soon as well..tho I bet it's correct just based on historical performance.

I'll give MT a pass on this one because they look at several different factors that are not a priority for me...tho I disagree with them in this case.

I was surprised as well to learn that wranglers are known for their strong resale value - not only for their lacking reliability

More money for gas is always better!..

And yes, it has never taken anything other than Premium when I owned it. It did start to hurt on time when premium gas in SoCal hit $3.90/gallon. I did endless research enough to convince my self that regular gas works just fine on my new tacoma. Then I reminded my self that I'm not really the guy who buys one car and make it last forever. Right now regular gas at Costco is $2.39 in here.

Well, maybe this time, people who bought it realized that problem and that is exactly why they are not even on the list anymore.

Had several Tacos & Honda/Acura products over time and always only follow the owners manual on fuel grade. I'm 87 all the way....

My last fill up with no special discount...just our typical daily cost right now...don't h8.
