SPOILERS AHEAD: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Discussion

For my brother's birthday today, who has never watched a single Star Wars movie in his life, I'm allowing him to BORROW my Star Wars collection. MEESA THINKS IMA GOOD BROTHER

 

In another forum, there's a guy that put forth this theory. He also thinks they're twins separated birth. (Which would make sense with the way they've reused so many plot points.) Anyway, part of his argument was the way Leia ran up and hugged Rey. This was supposedly the first time they had ever met but Leia seemed to know who she was.

Would that mean that Ren probably knows as well? Judging from his reaction to him finding out the droid was with a boy and a girl.. and he goes WHAT GIRL?!

 

Thought it was entertaining... but thats it. Wish JJ would stop destroying my childhood... first Star Trek and now this.

I mean how can a basic stormtrooper (that's a janitor??) be on par with a sith in a lightsaber duel. Kylo must really suck. Didn't really have the SW feel, the sounds, music, etc... but again, I thought it was entertaining. And to kill off SOLO!!! Come on JJ...

 

I think the producer forgot there were two more movies after this one. I like Ren's character and the conflict between his identity as a Sith and his inner petulance; it was a nice touch. Paired with his history/backstory to set the scene for his ultimate confrontation with Han/Leia; we had a good plot to go on. Unfortunately his, and pretty much most of the plots were finished in the first movie.

-Ren's identity has been made known. He confronted his father and killed him. Done.
-Rebels have won the day and defeated the Empire for the third time now (Sheesh). Done.
-The Republic is destroyed. That part of the plot dynamic didn't even start before it was finished.
-Finn has found a home. Done.

What else is left? Going into the second movie we have a very weak start of A: Rey training with Luke and B: who is the Supreme overlord guy

Spoiler: Don't read if you don't want to know who he may be

(speculation says it was Emperor Palpatine's master that he may or may not have killed from Episode 2 or 3 - forgot).

What's the conflict besides Luke/Leia/Rey confronting Ren and this overlord guy? You can't believably resurrect the Empire (First Order) yet again and yet again have the republic fight against impossible odds. Jesus, they won THREE TIMES. Whatever Episode VIII and VIIII turn out to be, they will have to be artificially driven as there isn't enough to go on after Episode VII

All I'm saying is, like Rey's character, Ren's character development and his HISTORY (grossly over looked and underdeveloped for a proper "Han confronting Ben/Ren" scene) should have been done better. There was too much useless crap like another super weapon that does nothing but kill of the Republic (why) and gets destroyed, the smart mouth x-wing pilot that does nothing as a character, the filler scenes that make no contribution what-so-ever to the continuation of the story... Get rid of this crap and you have plenty of time to properly develop Rey and Ren.

 

Finally got thru this thread. I just saw the movie last night. It was a lot to absorb but I really liked it, problems and all.

One interesting thing, I got there 45 minutes early and the theatre was about 1/4 full. I selected a seat with decent view away from others hoping it would stay that way. Nope. A little later a grandfather with two kids sat on my row near me. The kids were jumping around and dropping toys and such. Then some high school kids filled the row in front of me. They started horsing around and playing with their cell phones. Then some middle aged guys (like me) sat behind me. I started to wonder if I needed to move. I was hoping the movie wouldn't be spoiled by all the movement, talking and people checking phones. Once the movie started all the way to the credits, not a single cell phone went off, I never saw anyone check one, nobody talked or moved. I don't even think anyone got up to use the restroom. Just total silence with everyone engrossed in the movie, then people cheered when the credits started. I haven't experienced anything like that at the movies in a looong time.

Most of what I thought about it has already been shared. One thing I remember reading when the movie was first announced was about Snoke. Abrams said something about there not being any Sith but that there would be something more ancient and powerful that had to do with the dark side. This may be why Luke disappeared, to try and understand what he was dealing with. Also, there's a short reference to the Knights of Ren. These guys are something new. More than just a Sith and his apprentice.

I kept feeling like Rey is Luke's daughter but something about the way they looked at each other at the end made me question that. I do think she's related just not sure how. I do hope she's not Ben's sister. I really liked her character though.

I was ok with all the parallels to previous movies to a point. The 'new and improved' not-a-death-star death star thing was weak. And then bring in General Akbar and the pilot guy from ROJ was just too much. And if C3PO were to get accidentally dismantled I probably wouldn't be too upset.

It was really upsetting that Han was killed and that whole scene was way too rushed and awkward. I think Han knew what was going to happen. I think he knew it the moment Leia asked him to confront their son. With that in mind, I wonder if Han still did it because it may eventually be the thing that saves Ren. Perhaps the grief will be enough to bring him back at some point. If in fact Snoke is this ancient evil, it may be at some point that Ben and Rey must work together to defeat him and that's what it takes to bring balance. Who know? I can't wait to see where this goes. I also want to see it again whenever I get the chance. Hadn't been able to stop thinking about the whole thing. I was 10 when I saw Ep IV and I've been hooked since then. So glad they made this so maybe I can forget the prequels.

 

Coworker read up on another theory online that some believe Kylo Ren is uniting himself with the Dark Side to ultimately win over Snoke's trust/confidence and eventually end up killing Snoke himself.

Only reason this makes some sense is because of the scene where he looks at Vader's helmet and says he will finish what he started. Being Leia and Han's son, he has to know what Vader did (kill the chancellor, hence restoring balance to the Force).. More evidence to back it up would be when he thanks Han for allowing him to take his life and therefore completing his turn to the Dark side in Snoke's eyes.

So who knows.. at this point there's thousands of theories..

 

lol my comment above kind of compliments your theory.. (ren and rey teaming up to kill Snoke) But you're right, I'm hooked now as well. Can't wait to see how the story develops. I just hope it's something very UNPREDICTABLE. That would leave me satisfied.

 

Anyone else get the hint that Finn and Rey will ultimately battle? Both have the force but Finn's is generally expressed to help or save (good side) and Rey's is more aggressive and fear based. I have a feeling Rey isn't the "awakening" or balance, its Finn. Would be a shame as Finn's character so far is pretty weak.

 

Now THAT would be a huge plot twist. I wouldn't see that coming. But I agree, not sure if I would like that twist either. I like Rey's character far more than Finn so far. They tried to force too many comedy moments to him. :/

 

Rey is a much better actress and has a deeper and more believable character. She really had potential of carrying this movies. We'l see where her characters goes...

On my goof up in your quote (Renn) anyone else get mixed up with all the names?

Rey, Ren, Ben, Finn, Bo... Who came up with these names?

 

This may be a stupid question, but what makes you all think Finn is force sensitive? The only evidence I caught of that was that he used the light saber a few times, but Kylo eventually kicked his ass.

Personally, I think Finn is just a normal dude and that Rey is going to be the badass of the trilogy. I don't know who, if anyone, Rey will be related to, but I'm torn as t o whether it will be Luke or not. On one hand, I'm thinking it it because of all the obvious hints from the film...maybe they're trying to engage the younger crowd so they're making the films easier to piece things together and to drag out mysteries from one movie to the other for people with short attention spans. On the other hand, it could be typical Star Wars fashion of trying to lead us down one path and then completely mind-fucking us later on down the road.

Either way, I'm hooked!

 

I'm betting Finn is related to Mace Windu.

 

Its just a theory. His sudden and unexplainable decision (despite being a clone or stolen from birth -I'm unclear on this- and raised to be a janitor or something) to not follow through with his orders hints that he has the force and its guiding him. But you could be right; JJ could've used director magic to force the plot to take a turn it wouldn't normally take and have a random storm trooper unexplainably turn coat; first to happen probably ever (considering they are all clones - or is it stolen from birth - and raised to be a killing machine - or is it janitor - oh what the actual fuck!).

Anyways, would explain the off-putting, and so far unexplained, scene where the other trooper finger painted his helmet. Maybe that was a friend of his, maybe JJ will reveal more in the next move, or maybe JJ doesn't know what the fuck he's doing...

 

I sort of want to punch you in the throat for that last line.

It could be that Finn just had a crisis of conscience. Bit I keep thinking there was something significant about the guy that wilsoned his helmet at the beginning and we'll find out more later.

It would be interestingnif Mace Windu showed up again. There are thoeries that he wasn't killed by palpatine, that he used that force flying thru the air to grab a ship thing and survived. He probably won't show up but I think it would be cool, he'd be really old and damaged from everything that happened.
