Pro Comp Rims Beware

My ProComps are round, Black, no stars or fake bolts and spin round and round with no issues.

 

My Pro Comp center caps are "pressed on" to my 2011 hubs. Taking them off the front is basically a destructive operation. It's cheaper to buy a new center cap than it is to spend half an hour each with a cold chisel prying the thing off. On the back, it's not too hard to use the threaded hole on the brake drum to force the drum and center cap off together.

But I've never needed extended length acorn nuts. That said, I am using tapered acorn nuts that center the rims on the lugs.

 

The other thing to be aware of - is that once you put the pro comp center cap on - it's basically impossible to use the factory spare rim.

You MUST remove the pro comp center cap before attempting to mount the factory spare. There's a thread around here where some poor guy forced the spare on over the pro comp center cap and it became basically non-removable.

 

Guys it looks like I opened a can of worms on this issue!!!!! Thank you to the ones that help me to figure out my situation though.

 

Oh well I guess I'll have to replace the spare.

 

Or just knock the center cap off with a BFH before you mount the spare, and replace it later. Replacement centercaps are only like 10-15 bucks.

 

Wheel choices are subject to opinion and always will be. Truck owners aren't going to snap out of their own preferences and all of sudden choose what "pino" thinks is acceptable. I've seen horrible wheel choices on all sorts of vehicles, especially the recent trend with supercars. Desecrating Ferraris and the likes with 22" blinged out Forgiatos. Very few of their styles look good, but the rest are WTF?! Just because they're expensive doesn't mean they look good or belong on a certain car. I'd never put that shit on a supercar. I'll take some moderately priced BBS or MOMOs over those overpriced attention whore rims any day of the week.

The truck market is different with wheels and selections. You want a real truck wheel, get a true Trailready, Walker Evans or Method beadlock, but who has that kind of money to spend? Trucks are averaged priced vehicles and will mostly have averaged priced rims. There will never be a high priced wheel market for trucks just because it's a truck. The rims you mentioned are decent Tacoma wheels, but everyone has their own taste and by no means is SCS, FN, Level8 or TRD even considered high level wheel companies. They put out very nice wheels at an affordable price. Same with ProComp and the rest. This trend you speak of isn't a trend, it's just normal culture in the truck aftermarket segment. It's here to stay.

 

The Level 8s are around $500-600, FN's around $700-800, and TRD around $600-700ish on average, very reasonable for four wheels on $20,000-40,000 trucks. I hope I'm not coming off as some snob. My concern is quality. A lot of the wheels I referred to are incredibly heavy and have quality control issues or tolerance issues. Some of these guys running 40lb wheels with 50lb tires are throwing away a lot of performance and safety. The subjective style of them is impossible to argue. But the style can directly indicate quality. Quality is my issue.

My issue isn't with anyone of you guys - it's at the industry. I'm just very opinionated. That can cause problems on the internet.

 

I agree that wheels manufactures are producing wheels that will look like crap sooner then later because of the hideous nooks and crevice's that can never be cleaned unless you bust your tail to do it after some mud and dirt wheeling. Simple easy maintenance is where I'll put my $$$ on, but where are they? Rivets and bolts? good luck cleaning them. PVD Chrome with simple lines and smooth lip for my DD and road King. $.02

What's the hub bore diameter of the 16's? The recent pro comps I put on my 2nd gen had a hub bore of 108mm. 2 mm wider than the hub. So I had to use an ET lug (extended shank) nut to get the wheel to seat properly. Pro comps are typically lug centric not hub centric for tacomas.

Well just checked my center caps, they bolt on from the outside of the wheel so there would be no interference with the hub. I know it's 2nd gen, but 3rd gen oem wheels fit on 2nd gen's. Must be pro comps center cap design on some wheels they offer.

 

I had a similar problem on my 08 with Procomps. To fix it, I took a carbide burr in a air die grinder and shaved a little off the hubs so the cap would fit tight against the disc brake before the wheel went on.

 

Actually, I can't remember if my lug nuts are extended thread or not. Don't take my word one way or the other on that.

 

Redfish, could please measure the opening of the hub on the wheel for me? Looking for other options on center caps, something that maybe snaps in from the front of the wheel.

I had these in mind nit sure if they would fit.

 

They probably work if the hub hole on the rim had a lip for it to catch, but nice suggestion though.

 

Pro comp ftw. You have to check fit. Et lugs and no issues. Stay balanced and drive straight.
