    UPDATE:

Just heard from the dealership. They told me that it is NOT covered but they will take care of it at no charge.

At the end of the day it is getting fixed and we still do not have a definitive answer as to whether or not this should legitimately be something covered. SMH... Back to the drawing board.

I had this happen with a 2014 FJ twice in the worst circumstances. I got it back to the dealer and traded for my 2015 SR5. No regrets.

Hmm, OP, do you top off the tank? This is a known issue that if you add gas over the auto pump turn off it can flood that system.

There are more than a few threads on this, just a heads up to everyone here, don't know if you have see the posts.

Pump shuts off, no more gas. Simple.

Its not a charcoal canister. Its a secondary air pump that is only used during cold starts. The failure has nothing to do with gas or topping off. It is the valves sticking or failing at the pump. We see it often at Lexus (Toyota Part). If you throw a code, and the vehicle goes into limp mode just let the vehicle get to operating temps, turn off, disconnect your battery and clear the code and restart the vehicle. With the vehicle warm/hot it will not cycle through the secondary pump therefore no code and no limp mode. Yes it will return if when you start cold next day but this will get you by. If you call Toyota Customer Service and start a case with them, they might assist. It is a known repair with Toyota/Lexus. You need to find a dealership that is willing to help. There are still some out there!

Same like you ,couple week ago my dealership said not cover and asking $1000 to fix my 2012 Taco (just 17k). I had appointment with dealership this afternoon to fix the problem but i cancelled it to deal with the guy on Toyota Customer Services (800-331-4331). He said he will work on my case and respond to me tomorrow (Tue) or Wed. I will update later for everybody know my case.
I think you should call to Toyota Customer Services (800-331-4331) to deal with them, they may more helpful than dealership. Also if more people call to Toyota they may look back to check, recall or extend warranty for Taco.

    Update!!!!!
My Taco is fixed. The dealership said the p2442, p2440 codes not a power train so he charged $855 to change the new switching valves. However, because i am dealing with at Toyota Customer Services (800-331-4331) they checked the services history of my Taco such as oil change, installed auto start + very low miles (17k) + I own 2 new toyota; they sent the special authority code to dealership to cover my case. So i get out for FREE. Very happy about that.
I upload the invoice and the new part they installed for your reference. Like i said above, if you have this problem you should check with the Toyota Customer Services (800-331-4331) they are very helpful.

PS: thank you very much g35man

Has this only been a problem with 2012's or have other years been affected?

I guess it is time for me to join the failed secondary air injection pump club as mine failed while I was several hundred miles from home. Fortunately, because am in the car business and spent about 7 years in Toyota dealers, I knew who to call. I called my former team leader and he instructed me to buy a code reader, let the truck warm up, then clear the code after it had warmed up. That allowed me to be able to drive back to Georgia normally. What really sucks however is that this is my 4th Toyota and have been contemplating buying a new 4Runner. I hope it will either be covered under the emissions warranty or there will be some form of goodwill assistance available. Otherwise, as loyal as I am and have been to Toyota, I may have to reconsider my next purchase.

I have no problem paying for things that wear out or even things that should break but this is a well known issue of a part that should not fail this early in the life of the vehicle. Having spent 7 of my 27 years in the car business with Toyota, I saw a number of these secondary air injection pump failures on Tundras and Sequoia. The reason we are only now seeing them on Tacomas is that the Tacoma did not start using this type of secondary air injection pump until 2012. The Tundra and Sequoia started using them several years earlier. I believe this will become a very common issue on the 2012-2015 Tacomas as these vehicles start to age and accumulate more miles.

Update: After visiting the dealer where I used to work and my former team leader using the scan tool to manually cycle the air pump, the check engine light has not come back on. I have driven the truck each day since then and started the engine cold each day. Fluke ? Who knows but no check engine light or limp mode and the truck runs flawlessly. I guess I will not be spending a pile of cash on repairs now but instead can put that towards more mods and/or guns.

The check engine light stayed off for almost 2 months but finally came back on with the same codes (P2440 & P2442) so I took it back to the Toyota dealer where I used to work. I am thankful that I still have friends there. They replaced the Secondary Air Injection Valve assembly. They gave me employee price on the part and also hooked me up on the labor. I got out for a grand total of $576.59. While it is still a lot of money, it is a lot less than it could have been had I never worked there and didn't still have friends there.

We'll, after 44,000 miles on my 2012 Tacoma, I'm also a member of the P2442 "Secondary Air Injection" club. Dropped it off at Checkered Flag Toyota in Virginia Beach this afternoon for it's 45K service. Told them about the code (buddy had a nice blue tooth code reader). Of course they have to use their equipment ($115) to diagnose it. I bought the 7 yr, 70K "platinum" extended warrantee when I purchased the truck. Hopefully I won't need to use it (if I don't use it, I'll get the $1,100 back minus $50). The service guy said they just received a TSB on this exact issue on the Tacoma. Hopefully using these tips, if it is not covered, will help me out with 'After Warrantee Assistance" if needed:
    • 1st time Toyota buyer. previous vehicles American made.
    • Purchased the vehicle new.
    • Purchased at their dealership.
    • I bring it here for EVERY scheduled service.
    • Was talked into the “Platinum extended warrantee” for peace of mind for 7 years
    • Never kept a vehicle more than 6 years
    • If AWA is granted, I’ll remain a customer because it shows me you stand behind your product.
And if not covered, will leave a bad taste in my mouth after hearing so many great things about the Tacoma. I'll also submit an official complaint and maybe it will go the way of the Tundra at some point.

    May 6th.
Checkered Flag told me it was both Valves that are stuck open. They also said that IF IT WAS an issue with the air pumps, it would be covered under Toyota's 10 yr, 150K emission's warrantee, but the valves are not. I will need to use my 7 yr 70K purchased warrantee to cover them.. a $100 deductible, and since I'm using it, will not end up being reimbursed $1,200 at the end of the 7 years. I still feel I'm being snookered, because it's my understanding that it's moisture coming from the fans that are causing the valves to fail. He also said w/o the warrantee I paid for, it would be in the $600's... bottom line $115 for the diagnosis and $100 deductible... gonna try to talk to the manager still, because, for me its a safety issue, I was pulling out into traffic when I got the loss of power. This failure should not put the truck in "limp mode"... now I'll have to wonder when the pumps will cause the new valves to stick and what I may be doing when the truck loses power...
