I am looking for answers concerning towing my Tacoma. It is an 04 SR5 4x4 Auto Trans with a manual shift transfer case. I have the towbar mounted and installed a driveshaft disconnect from a company called Remco and have towed it behind a motorhome several thousand miles. The driveshaft disconnect is a piece of junk and I would like to remove it but I do not want to destroy my tranny. According to the owners manual the Taco is not towable.

I have towed a GM product with the same setup and according to the owners manual you just put the transfer case in netural and the trans in park and tow away. I asked the local Toyota shop dude what was the difference in the GM and the Toyota transmission and he said "they are just different". Wow, I was impressed.

My question is this, why can't the Tacoma be towed with the transfer case in neutral and tranny in park like a GM.

If it is a liability problem with Toyota I am not worried about that.

Mine is manual transfer case with neutral. It does have a 4x4 shift on the fly button on the side of the transfer case shifter.

    Ahh,ok.

My only guess then is maybe something to do with the transmission or x'fer case.
Could using a dolly to raise the front work? Think my manual shows that.... I'll check.

Mine can't be dinghy towed either, could be the front isn't re-enforced enough for that, maybe axle windmilling from the front axle, someone said why here or on T.N. , but I just don't recall.
