This. Haha I've noticed this is more dangerous on the old style metal cans with the latch rather than the plastic ones. Plastic has a cap you have to unscrew and you notice the pressure bleed off before it opens.

I was in camp with my steel can, didn't notice how much pressure was built up and when that damn latch popped off I shot a gallon of hot gas ten feet away covering a dudes hood and windshield in front of a crowd.
    Be careful

In my experience the problem with a long handled spade and quick fists is feeling like the darn thing is really secured well. If you use and D handle shovel you can have one quick fist oriented vertically on the shaft of the shovel and the other quick fist oriented horizontally on the D handle...then that shovel will never become a projectile

My wife and I really like the full size square point shovel. it's your typical variety found at the home store.

I decided to be completely original and mount a 60" pinch point slate pry bar. #EAF

This tool was an insurance policy for potential rockfall on a particular trail. And if feeling mighty, it can be thrown as a spear.:D

Next primitive family camp trip I take in the desert and for every future trip, I'm bringing some kind of rake. Tired of using the shovel as a rake.

I have a buddy that rakes the campsites every time we go out. Cracks me up. Love it.

haha, I have a buddy that does the same thing! He has some OCD issues, but to his credit, he's got a very nice orderly site. I just :drunk:and watch. I cant see myself bringing a rake but then again I just realized that i have a collapsible rake in the shed that folds flat. :anonymous:

I don't have yet. But will probably pick up a light duty collapsible one like ERMB described above.

That's good. Ames made the shovel I have. It too has fiberglass handle. It's great, helps reduce fatigue during prolonged working.

For it to qualify as EAF tools have to be made with carbon fiber handles and titanium hardware to hold it together.

I have a shovel i take camping, was mounted in my last truck with 2 quick fists, need to mount it in my new truck.

Never thought about bringing a rake. Dont think it would do much good out here though raking dust and rocks wouldn't do much

Thats what i figured too but still :notsure: maybe in areas with lots of loose soil, leaves, sticks etc it would be great for making spots look more natural and less camped on. Wouldn't do much in the desert

What's really great are all the different bioregion deserts we have in the Southwestern US, the Great Basin, the Mojave, Sonoran, the Colorado. They are all unique.

    Didn't think about that.

Absolutely! I love being able to drive an hour and be in the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world or up on top of the colorado plateau in the flatlands. Or a couple hours and be in sand dunes or someplace iconic like red mesa or the wave!

I keep one of my old Avy shovels in the truck along with a spear point shovel (as noted above) for winter use. Newer avy shovels are designed to be used much like a hoe to move lots of snow out of the way.

Also keep a 36" Bow (swede) saw, axe (not a hatchet!), and now added a pry bar. (ex http://www.amestruetemper.com/products/detail.aspx?ProductId=1238&FamilyId=166&LineId=95)
I get the most use out of the swede saw, and the spear point shovel.

I use the axe mostly for delimbing. I prefer the reach, leverage, and safety of the long handle to prevent delimbing me.
