Exactly my thoughts on the grease. With new seals and bearings, I would expect to see some fresher grease in there. That looks like a couple hundred thousand miles of use.

I guess for now I'll wait till after the 1st and take the box of stuff to the guys that replaced them last and see what they have to say.

Takes a lot to admit that.

Wonder if those were the original bearings with some new grease thrown in? Koyo makes good stuff from my experience.

I will admit I am eating a healthy plate of crow.

I think they are original too. I think Koyo is what @BamaToy1997 uses in his wheel bearing kits, and made in Japan is a sure sign they may be original. Guess I'll have to wait and hear what the story is.

My honest opinion about the bearings that I see in those photos: It looks like an inner seal where the CV axle goes into the back of the spindle has gone bad, or perhaps the roller bearings in the back end of the hub have worn, allowing the seal to leak. All that "red" that you see there in the grease and on the bearing and hub? That is rust. As the water gets into the bearing area it heats up to the point of steaming, which "cleans" the rollers. Sadly clean rollers=not lubricated, and they begin to wear. The grease is still there and is not as thick and not working as well, so the fine microscopic metal being worn off the rollers mixes with the grease and the moisture, causing the metal to rust. I would be willing to bet a magnet would be attracted to a lot of that grease.

The 12th photo shows the inside of the inner area of the hub. Inside that opening is a set of needle bearings. If they are worn then the hub itself should be replaced or you will have this problem return in the future.

I agree, looks like rust for sure. The issue is these were replaced around 9000 miles ago and both sides look this way.

When I originally had them replaced back in March it was because the passenger side was loose and had lots of play. I had both sides replaced.

Fast forward to November and I replaced the brake rotors and noticed massive amount of play in the passenger side again, as well as play in the driver side.

I understand that mistakes happen and maybe a seal was improperly installed, but on both sides? and to have the play return again so quickly, on the same side... I really don't know what to think.
Plus, I was told they had been replaced with an aftermarket bearing to help keep costs down the first time. I don't think Koyo is aftermarket is it?

And yes, I had the bearing hubs replaced as well this time. It's all new except for the locking hubs and the vertical spindle.

Koyo supplies bearings for the factory, but also aftermarket as well. I buy mine directly from Koyo. If the seal was not replaced on the back side of the hub, and was bad to begin with, it would take very little in miles to wear out the new bearings. Imagine how fast the engine would go if you poured a half-quart of water into it and drove it for 9000 miles.

I agree with you on all that. I appreciate your input on all this too.
The first picture shows the work order and the work that was done. It does say both inner and outer bearings, cups and seals.
