I like my wheel tire combo. The 8.5" wheel is the maximum width the 255 tires can be mounted on. This is both good and bad. Good because it plumps the tire so doesn't look that skinny. Bad because they don't offer a lot of sidewall protection, I do have some good rock rash now. But it's not like the lip of the wheel and tire sidewall are flush. Even though it's not much I don't have day to day problems. I could rub a curb and not touch the wheel. Here's a pic from my build as I was a topic of interest

And that's without truck weight on it.

I definetly love the Maxxs, but have been debating next tire size myself lately. 255.. 285.. Or 315.. (Without monies to regear) :notsure:

I like my 285's. My next tire size will be 315 no doubt :) I won't be regeared but I know a couple people with 35's and not regeared and no problems

@SconnieHailer just did BFGs in 295 75 16 and I am not going to lie, they look good. In a perfect world I would have gotten the 17" F5s and done the 34 x 10.5 x 17 BFGs but I have read a few times about different issues regarding 17" wheels, not to mention the increased price of tires for those wheels.

I'm going to more than likely stick with 16's when it comes down to getting 35's I like the 3.5" bs on the 16" F5's

Yeah I didn't even realize that the 17" F5 only came in a 4.30 BS. Another reason why the 16" is better.

Yeah and the 3.5" should help me clear the rear with the BAMF shock relocation so I can hopefully loose the spacers

Yeah dont even remind me of that. I dropped out of that group buy because I refused to run spacers and new wheels weren't anywhere on the horizon. Now here I am a couple months later with the perfect wheels to run that kit.

Done that plenty buddy! They might end up having another soon. I mean the kit isn't but $100 and the shocks are like $560 so that's not even bad full price imho

Yeah, now that it is an option I am deciding if I want to go through the process of the relocation. I can get extended length 2.5 diameter rears that bolt into the stock location for just over $700 and then I get more oil capacity and performance, just not as much travel for close to the same price.

I'm 400 miles into my drive to WI from WY. On road manners are everything I hoped for switching from the MTR. Rocking 17 mpg on a 295 = awesome

Thats awesome! Question for you on your kings. You mentioned no preload at all. Mine came with about 3/4" of thread showing. How much of that can I reduce. I couldn't find anything in the manual or instructions that talked about a same limit of thread above the collar but I definitely want the smallest amount possible. How much do you have on yours?

Well, for those who are wanting the F5s. Here is a little one day review for you. They look great, give great clearance, are very light maybe its just me but I feel like I can tell a difference in rolling resistance probably since the steel wheels are about 10 pounds heavier each.

No for the kind of bad. With the 3.5 BS I expected a little bit of trimming to occur, but since I have the 255 85 16 tall skinny tires I expected it to be minimal. This morning when I left discount tire I immediately heard the rubbing on a full lock turn through a gutter where the tire stuffed. No problem, its just my mud flaps. After work, I had to stop at home depot to get a drill bit and some silicone so I unscrewed the flaps and went for another drive to go install a rack on a T4R.

Every time I turn right before full lock I get a pretty violent rub, on the Cab Mount :annoyed:. Not a huge deal, I figured I would eventually have to trim it when I went to larger tires, just didnt expect it so soon. The 3.5BS pushes the tire out far enough and makes the 255s bulge enough, that the corner of the tire hits the cab mount on turns. I am sure that when the tires are stuffed it will be worse.

So time to cut. Not a huge deal overall and something I am willing to deal with for the other benefits, but something those with the popular (no trimming necessary) 255s should be aware of. @Crom

I also think that my alignment may have a little to do with it. Rubbing is a little worse on one side than the other and my alignment pulls that way a little more. My theory is that the caster is off on one side causing the rubbing to be more prevalent there than on the other side. Maybe with more positive caster will push the wheels forward enough to avoid trimming. I have about 2.8 caster now so 3-3.5 may do the trick.

Thanks for the early report. For comparison what was the back spacing on the steel wheels?

And I think you're right on the alignment. If caster is different between left and right whichever side is less will be the direction of pull from felt at the steering wheel. And more positive caster will move the wheel more forward in the wheel well.

I think the steel wheels have a BS of like 5 or 5.25 so there is a pretty dramatic difference. I just spent some time out in the driveway cycling the wheel back and forth and up and down and it doesn't look too bad. Definitely hits the cab mount but just barely. I will probably just chop a little off tomorrow to see how things go after that. Looking at all the CMC threads to fit 285s I doubt I need even close to that much.
