    How to ID Gear Drive Case


    If you have 7 bolts in the rear cover then you have the gear driven unit.
    If you have 5 bolts holding the rear cover then you have the chain drive unit.
    Bolt #7 is behind the drive shaft and can't be seen in this picture.

    I saw that...i didn't know 1st gens could have either? Which one is better? I won't see my truck till after Christmas to check. But i think it's the 7

    You should be a driver side drop, correct?
    If that is the original T-case, it probably has a chain driven case. That being the case, there may be a other issues to check out... possibly the 3rd member or ring & pinion.

    Does it whine while you are off the throttle, in gear & coasting?

    Ist gens came with the chain driven case. The gear driven units are an older version. Mine is a gear driven Inch Worm 4.7 T-case.
    As to which are better, don't know but I'm sure there is some debate about them.

    It's not a J shift case but you can work with it to make it so with the parts you have.
    At least the insides are good, no whine.

    Hmm I may take you up in that...are they easy to take apart??

    Yeah it does but it has more of a grinding type sound...ill have to get a video when my truck is running again
