That's looks like a second gen. My question is did the shift boot connect to the stock shift knob? If so how do you keep the boot from sliding down the shifter?

 

Wow. What do all of those do? T-case, ???.

 

Left and center are reduction boxes right is 2wd/4wd.

I'm with forty2 on this... as long as you match revs, skipping gears is no problem. The synchro's job is to match revs.. if you do it before releasing the clutch, the synchro doesn't really have to do anything. This \/

I know double clutching was important for older cars but is it still necessary? What does it help with in a modern manual transmission that doesn't require double clutching?

I'll be heel toeing once I get a Tacoma just for fun... I do it almost every time I get in my car lol. Heel toeing is simply rev matching while simultaneously braking. Rarely is it necessary on the streets because you never need to late brake into a turn while downshifting so as to setup a high rpm dig out of the turn... Heel toeing is most useful in road course racing.

 

I wish I would have started this thread in a different sub forum as I can see that us manual fan boys all stick together regardless of pregen, 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen.

Does it really mater if it slides down a bit? The 1st gens all show a little of the shifter rod. I think I prefer seeing it rather than covering it up. Keeps with the TRUCK vibe, not the car vibe.

I'll likely put my Hurst T-handle on mine. Great shifter, unless it's over 100 degrees. Ouch!

 

Does it really matter? nah, I suppose not. Its not that i mind the shift rod showing (every other truck ive had has it show). It is more that the connector on the leather is kind of unsightly when it is not connected to the knob. Not a big deal just something I noticed on the third gens.

 

I'm just going to remove the connector and redo the top of the shift boot. Have a good friend that does leather work may just have a tooled leather boot made.

 

Now your talking my language. A tooled boot would be awesome. I would just worry that any leather thick enough to tool might be too stiff for the boot. You could do a soft leather with some heavy leather accents. I'm picturing like cowboy chaps are, soft material with a heavy tooled accent down the legs. I want pics if you go this route.

 

Heel and toeing in my 2009 4cyl 5 speed is hard because the throttle pedal got cut shorter due to the recall before I got it. I can heel and toe with my heel on the brake and toe throttle. It's hard to heel and toe with boots on too, but it's a truck...

 

For skipping a bunch of gears downward it's still a good idea. Syncro wear is going to be more significant the greater the speed differential between the input and output of the trans. You certainly don't need to rev match like you do in something that's dog geared and non-syncro'd, but a ~500 RPM difference between the two shafts compared to a 3000 RPM difference is a hell of a thing. The only time I double clutch a syncro'd trans is when dropping a lot of gears to pass on a two lane highway. Drop to neutral, blip to 5k, into 3rd (or whatever, hasn't come up yet in my first 500 miles w/ the Tacoma).

Important note: This is different than heel-toe downshifting that you would do with every downshift. Heel-toe is all about not upsetting the vehicle at the limits of adhesion, usually in a track setting, and concentrates on how the next gear is engaged, NOT syncro engagement. Not something that should come up very often, or ever really in a 4x4 truck. I tried today just for shits and giggles when I went to take my wife to lunch, it's not really laid out well for me to pull it off, too much room between the throttle and brake combined with my weird foot method makes it not work. Someone that gets their foot closer to 45° and beyond might have better luck.

 

Does this shift knob have some good weight to it?
