wow he is very lucky. I need to let my dad read this. he welds for a living.

 

watch out when welding galvanized metal - while the effects are not as severe its still pretty nasty (metal fume fever).

Good information, welding is a great skill to possess, but always practice good safety techniques.

Wow, that's scary. I've only ever done a bit of welding, not sure if I want to do much more. I've often wondered about the health implications of people breathing those fumes in all day. I was already to set about welding some galvanized steel one time until someone told me not to.

wow. i weld alot at my job and and break cleaner is a commonly used product as well. surprised that i have never heard of this. ill be sure to print this article and pass it out at my union meeting next friday. thanks.

 

i am currently on a job where we have been welding for twelve hours a day 7 days a week. we are doing maintainance on a hydrogen furnace at a steel mill in western pa that has not been opened up and worked on in 18 years. the plant loses 1 million dollars a week when it is down therefore we are working around the clock. my lungs feel like im a three pack a day smoker. five more days til we are done and i get to breath some fresh air and relax at my camp.

 

Hot work as the navy called it, they grind the paint/etc away on hulls, then heat it at like 400 degrees. Next day they weld as needed, made for a lot of fumes in dry dock.
Phosgene gas was used in WW1, if you smoke near refrigerants like R-114 /R-12 etc, you can get phosgene from the fumes goin in the cig. and out into your mouth. It could be so simple as a 24" fan saves lives.

I heard someone say " its what you don't know that'll kill you" one time in the ship yard, not sure but I bet he was a welder.

 

yeah i agree with tacoyota the shipyard is a bad place to breath air at . you get retards grinding lead paint, paint burning, and on top of everything else . i should know been in the ship repair biz for 10 years and welding a little longer

 

now i know why my buddy wears a freaking space suit looking welders helmet and a super battery powered filter on his back when welding in confined areas...

 

asbestos was scary too, worker in suit was pressureized ( not much psi ),work area was closed and air sucked out. ... something like that, I kept clear. Nothing particulate into the lungs is good "just dust" .. "just dirt"... now silicosis from concrete dust.
