Truck very tipsy

I was driving down the road yesterday and decided to check the body roll on this truck. Holy crap I felt like the truck was going to tip over. I was only doing 40. Severe body roll. This is an 06 reg cab pre runner. If I just switch to the bilstein 5100's will this solve some of the problem. Or do I have to completely replace both side leaf springs. I cant dodge a thing so watch out granny.

 

No lift that I know of. Tall stance though.

 

body roll improved immensely with the larger leaf springs on my truck fwiw.

Take this as a grain of salt....but....

The truck is probably fine. It's your ass-meter that's too sensitive. I've seen this countless of times offroading. It's an 'unnaturdal' feeling and why you suspect its tippy.

 

Does your truck have a bench seat? The first day I got my truck I felt like it was rollover across the highway.

My regular cab feels floaty, and the bench seat does nothing to keep you in place.

My future lowering springs and swaybar will undoubtedly help.

 

Simply put as a broad generalization, offroad supple is opposite of on road performance. Trying to to combine towing and offroadability is always difficult, let alone slaloming like a car.

If you want stability on road get sway bars , or get bigger sway bars ,lower it too with smaller tires or lowering kit. TRD offroad and onroad performance wont combine well, like an f-15 that cant seem to corner on the runway at 100 mph.

Reg cabs being shorter have quicker steering/ 36' turn radius , sorta feels floaty that way.

 

Mine felt that way till I put some Spidertrax spacers all way around..

 

On my old 97 Dakota, I went from 15" to 16" rims,combined that with a 70 sidewall instead of 75. Just that alone really firmed it up w/o making it feel stiff. What body roll was there wasn't a problem after that.

Tough topic, so many variables possible. Assuming its stock, I doubt there is a problem. Trucks lean when cornering, hell, I bet a geo metro could out corner a 4wd taco.I think of it as a design characteristic, not a design flaw.

 

what tires are you running? size? psi? I was running some hwy treads and they seem to give the same feeling like jello when I whipped the wheel back and forth. I now have commercial grade tires with some stiff sidewalls and they helped the jello feeling and upped the psi to about 35 all the way around. It does not seem to wobble with the wheel whips but the heavier tires sure impacted the mpg.

 

they have larger swaybars for these trucks?! where do i get them!

 

not sure if they are larger , but eibach or hellwig make a set I think

 

I have an 09 5-lug regular cab auto that I push very hard through the turns, tires howling etc, and I don't feel as if I get much body roll. My other ride is a 2004 Infiniti G35 Sport Sedan 6mt, that car is rated at 0.9gs of lateral grip, and I push that way harder than my truck. So as a comparision I do not feel that my truck has bad body roll, but it is a tiny 5-lug that is way lower to the ground.

 

If it's tipsy, perhaps you should stop using the ethanol gas they give you guys down there in the States!!

 

sway bar might have been removed. I had mine pulled off for offroading and it definitely helped offroad but lent to a lot of body roll under hard cornering. I just put it back on this weekend and now unless i'm going to go on an off roading trip, i think it will stay on.
Other than that recommendation, tire pressure, type/profile of tires, and understanding that its a high-profile truck are all things to think about.

id have to say the 5 lugs and the 6 lugs have comprable handling...the 6 lugs are higher up but have a much higher spring rate than our trucks...i drove my dad's truck for awhile and now mine....and id have to say the 6 lug trucks don't have an excessive amount of body roll

Well The truck is a pre-runner not a 4x4. I currently have 265/75/16 toyo countrys. My psi Is 34 all around. The back end sits about an inch taller than the front so im not sure If the previous owner added a leaf for better load carrying. You are right on with the jello comment, thats exactly how it feels. I will be replacing the tires with General Grabber AT2 same size. Maybe that will help. Im not looking to do slalom in this truck just a little freaked how I feel like im riding around on Slinky springs. The truck is completely stock.
