If you go into the INV / Apparel in the pip boy it shows an overall armor rating

 

I have all combat stuff. All my armor is up around 150, ill have to check again though

 

Are there any items that you should NOT scrap? i.e. you will need it to construct something later in the game? Or is everything made from raw scrapped junk?

Kinda, depends on how creative you want to be. W/o mods you cant make glass cups,beer bottles, pool balls, pool sticks, and other junky type items if you want to make a cool Pool room or bar.

 

There's heavy combat armor, sounds deceiving but those are different opposed to regular combat armor and you can mod them too. Same applies for sturdy synth armor (strongest) vs regular synth armor.
Since they put on more weight I would go with deep pocketed/ultra lightweight mods.

when you wear power armor over your existing armor you will only get the benefits of the power armor pieces.

Yeah so really if you want to explore/scavenge with the least possible weight really you could just hop in a power suit with no armor and it won't drop your dam resis. or anything.

 

Ive found lightweight builds help the same amount as deep pocketed. Since deep pocketed add 10lb carry weight but weigh an additional ~5lb, you only gain 5. Which you can save just by doing a lightweight

 

Yellow items are junk , green items can be moved / used or scrapped

 

I have my combat armor as ultra lightweight on chest and legs and deep pocketed arms

 

You'll run across gunner commanders and lieutenants with heavy combat armor, if you're looking for better armor that's more resistant don't pass those up cause you can put mods on them too.

I just put piper in combat armor with no underlay. No need to waste weight on her with silly clothes

When I was a kid and we would play Morrowind that's sometimes the only thing we'd do all day. There's nothing like an entire town in man pile mode.
