I haven't encountered him. So far I've completed MacCready, Valentine and Hancock. I've temporarily used Codsworth, Dogmeat, Dans, and Piper. I don't think I've run into any others yet.

That was my technique but I was like a level 15 and using Dogmeat, a regular hunting rifle or shotty and the deathclaw eventually would catch me before I made it through the door and kill me.

VATS leg shots

 

Run out and drop a few frag mines and run away

 

I rarely ever use VATS , seems like I miss more that I ever hit

 

I'll try both of those. I usually don't bother with explosives. I mainly use projectiles 99% of the time. My .308 combat rifle is awesome now and I never miss in vats now unless they go behind something. 95's on all head shots haha

 

I've had good luck with lobbing a few frag mines or pulse mines

 

I usually only use VATS when at point blank range to specify body parts for hits.

If I'm outside of spittin distance, I generally freehand it

 

It's all about that vats helmet mod for power armor. You'll basically never miss again. Also my luck is high, that may have something to do with it too. About 50% of emenies now go down with one shot. Even if it's not in the head or body.

 

If you get in a 'suicide fight' like seeing that skull level deathclaw come around the corner, VATS up ASAP and use whatever you have with the most crit power or speed of attack (Deliverer is King Shit for this) and empty your AP on one leg, with a finger on the 'stop VATS' button.

If/when you get the cripple crit, swap to the other leg till your AP is gone. Now you're 95% able to kite as needed

 

Oh , and I've also used the artillery support a 1/2 dozen times including killing the Legendary Deathclaw that lives in that huge sinkhole off to the east

PS - If you use artillery smoke grenades , remember to switch back to frags so you don't accidentally call an artillery fire mission down on your position when you don't really have anywhere to run lol

 

I never wear power armor

Maybe 10% of the time so far

 

I used power armor exactly 3 times in my last game (level 41ish, beat it running the BoS quest line)
