Quick RELAY MOD

I didn't want the wires coming out of my relay exposed to moisture inside the enigine bay. Could't fine shrink wrap that large.....An old piece of bike innertube works well!

 

Another thing to do...get some clear silicone (like Goop! adhesive) and put it in and around the wires where they exit the connector. Be sure to get it up into the connector too (not the contact area, just the place where the wires go in).

Then, once that goop is hardened, use silicone dielectric grease on the electrical connection side.

THEN cover it with your inner tube! If that relay experiences water problems, it's probably time to go to the Ark...

 

What does the relay do? Is it a part that is known to cause problems from...
- humidity?
- driving through high water?
- washing the engine?
- premature component failure from all of the above and for other reasons?

It looks good....but might actually hold in moisture.

 

I was just thinking the same thing. You'll still get water in there cause it is not sealed and it'll hold in the folds and stuff.

I'd go with silicone and dielectric grease if I did anything- and I honestly wouldn't worry about it all that much...but that's just me.

 

I never really covered my relays at all. So far no problems. Should they be sealed up? They are high up in the engine bay close to the battery

 

No real need to do thi...just me taking an extra step to prolong the life. I'm sure it would be fine without it.

To answer someone above: a relay acts like a switch allowing power to flow to add on accessories like lights, cb radios etc etc...
