Is the Tacoma union made?

say what you want about UPS, I absolutely fuckin hate them I do not care if they are union. They are terrible. I've watched them drop parcels that say fragile with no care. I've seen them throw them around like nothing. I used to play pool with someone that worked for them and from what he told me about their work fuck them.
I've purposely not ordered stuff online because I do not want UPS. Their rates are bullshit and their brokerage fees are robbery.

I wouldn't pay them more than 10cents until they learn to fuckin read and understand what fragile means. I watched one driver load a cart of stuff for an art store, hit the curb have all of it fall and watch him kick majority of the boxes onto the sidewalk out of the street. Physical labour or not these fucks do not deserve anything more than 10cents. I've had so many packages from UPS that look like they decided to beat the box with a bat prior to delivering it. I watched the driver that was delivering my rims throw them off the back of the truck onto my driveway before loading them on his cart and bringing them to the door. Fucker was lucky they weren't damaged, had him open all of them before I signed to make sure they weren't damaged.

Maybe its because they are union and protected they do not care. But FedEx isn't union and I have had no problems with them or DHL

 

And to this, I'd say be aware of what you are shipping and package it accordingly or pay for the true premium way to transport a valuable.

It's a pretty broad statement IMO. While I don't work for UPS, I know plenty of people who do and they are well paid but, they work their asses off to please the customer. I'm sure there are bad apples on the UPS tree but, name a place that doesn't have a few...

 

Funny thing is a lot of my hobbys are what others do for a living haha. I do a lot of wood working and work on cars. Both are jobs. but both make shit money compared to what I do. Carpenters here make 30-35 an hour. mechanics are even worse. Don't get me wrong 30 isnt all that bad.
That said I work electrical. One of the higher paid trades at $41.40/ hour and double time for overtime. I honestly love it though. Like any job there are obviously the days I hate it and get pissed off, mostly because I always get stuck working with idiots. But I love what I do. I have fun doing it. I get to see some cool stuff and work on cool projects. I spent almost 2 years working on the Toronto airport pedestrian tunnel. Really cool job.

But yes. Its funny, I see two things, apprentices who are in their 30s or 40s who are starting a second career because its just that, most jobs do not pay like they used to and trades pay amazing. and then the young apprentices that started young like I did that are just useless. I worked with one guy the other day whos 4th term, and was just a lazy useless shit. Doesn't give the slightest shit about his job. I swear many are lucky I am not their boss because I'd be firing people left and right. 4th term, told to run a conduit and he gets to an obstruction being another conduit. What does he do? Not the smart thing of making a saddle which would take more time and work but not fuck over me who still needs to finish running a pipe rack, NOPE he puts his right in front of mine, blocking mine to the point I cant even put a coupling on and working around his. THEN to top it off pulls wire in his already so now I need to pull his wire out, redo all his pipe run, re pull the wire redo joints and then and only then can I finish my job. All because he didnt care to do it properly. When I told the journeyman he worked with he flipped saying how the apprentice is a useless shit.

Its pathetic how many I work with like this.
And then of course I have the friends who make shit money and say they hate their job but do not want to try anything new thats physically demanding.

I love it though, when I go through facebook and see one saying so and so started working for toronto Hydro or so and so joined local 43 united association of plumbers and pipe fitters. and these so and sos are people that in highschool said I was a loser and idiot for not going to university and went straight into a trade. Even more when I get one guy I went to highschool with that used to mock all of the co op students that were getting into construction saying we were all idiots that cant do anything besides physical labour because we are too stupid to go to school. Oh how I made him work like a bitch hahaha. Your masters in chemical engineering means shit here buddy, now start bringing over all that 4 inch rigid for me and start threading.

But hey I was brought up by my grandparents, who were both old school italian immigrants who came here with nothing and worked hard for everything they own. Grandfather was a hard working construction worker and he passed that to me.

 

The problem is that very few american places will shit to Canada with anything besides UPS.
Maybe UPS is different there, but UPS here is terrible. And their lovely, we tried to deliver something at 1pm, you werent home. we will try again tomorrow, at 1pm notices just make you angry when you get home and see them.
Given I have ordered a lot of car parts online and also working construction and doing controls for many, we usually have a lot of deliveries often from UPS. Given I have an estimated 40 run ins a year with UPS, I've had very VERY few good experiences with them.

 

Tuition in Canada is cheap. I paid about 5k per year for a full course load from a good university. In other words I paid 20k for a degree in Canada plus living expenses. That's literally half of what most Americans pay. Also, if you take kinesiology, you have no one but yourself to blame for not having a job. There aren't that many gym teaching and physiotherapy jobs out there. At least not close to as many as kinesiology majors that are graduating.

 

Maybe out west, but I know here in ontario many complain about how expensive it is.
Its funny, so many say that about kine either my sister is one of the really lucky ones or she just got in before this huge hype started for it. Because she got her masters and got a job right away. But yes it seems many are suddenly going into Kinesiology. Its almost like the new engineering. I swear 8-10 years ago the thing was engineering. EVERYONE was going to uni for it.

 

They complain about how expensive it is because they don't know anything else. This is the same way people complain about how expensive it is to fill a gas tank in Canada even though in Europe it's 2x-3x more. I paid off my education by working just in the summer and living with my parents. That isn't hard to do. Hell, I bought a car in my last year and I still didn't carry any student debt. That was only 5 years ago. The provinces here control tuition rates so they haven't flown up nearly as high as the rates in the USA.

Yes, there was a golden age for Kine but it's over. Much like how New Media was all the hype for a couple of years. Both of those degrees may as well be shit paper at this point unless you know someone in the industry who can get you a job. Once you're in with those degrees, you are in. Right now you have to pick your degree carefully. I'm guessing it's always been that way though.

 

I'm with you in that I enjoy my job as well. But, even if I didn't I would still work the same job as opposed to something paying $10 - $15 an hour.

So, the guys working with you that are duds...union or not?

That is sad.

& $10k a year here for school isn't anything special in terms of tuition.

However the two tier structure is fairly normal. I know for in province it's normally about 60% of the price of what it is to go to school out of province. IMHO there isn't much reason to go out of province unless you are doing graduate work anyways.

I guess I should add that there are state schools here that one can attend free or very low cost for the first few years but, they are just starting to take off on any scale.

 

Except that the CAD is at 0.71 USD. So 9.7K in USD is 13.4K CAD. Yikes.

I'm still in favor of Government Regulated tuition. Basically if you want your charter to give degrees you must comply with government tuition rates. The schools here, including several that are well know of their biology, engineering, and medical schools, have no problem living within there means to achieve low tuition.

I'm not union (and never have been) but, have seen the same type of work ethic at everyplace I've worked.

 

I've worked both. The pay is better union. The work is no different. Good and bad work in both. Only thing I've noticed is the bad workers can keep a job in union. Where they'd be fired non union.

Often see much bigger jobs as well working union. No non union company would be building an airport. So you see some cool stuff. Where I started was service though. And you learn way more doing that than new construction
