oil filter spec

Just went to change out the OEM oil filter on my 08 V-6. I always use FRAM as replacements. The FRAM filter is about 5/8" shorter than the OEM. Will this be a problem?

 

I use FRAM also. It has worked fine for me.

i just went to the new owners orientation at toyota. they mentioned that you should only use toyota brand oil filter. at first i thought it was just so they could sell their own brand but they said it was because of the gasket. on others (fram, mobile, etc) the gasket over the 5000 mile run before the next oil change, the gasket tends to stick and come off the oil filter. and if you don't notice it and put the new oil filter on while the old gasket is stuck on, you have a double gasket that will eventually pop and all the oil will jet out. with the oem toyota oil filter the gasket is held on the oil filter by brackets or something like that, that won't come off. also they mentioned that the oem filter is designed especially for the vehicle with something inside on how it holds the oil and filters it.

Well that is what i got out of the orientation. I found it informative. but then again who knows.

 

thats only if you super tighten the filter. before you put it on, you should wet the rubber ring with the new oil. this ensures a tight seal. also, you're only supposed to hand tighten the filter on to the bolt. i've used fram filters all my life and never had a gasket come off. the only time it did was with a honda filter on my old accord.

 

This whole thread is wrong on so many levels.

FRAM ain't gonna be your best filter. Worst rep out there.

Anybody who doesn't notice a 1/4 wide rubber ring stuck on the filter flange on this engine (on top, right in front of you), shouldn't be working on a car.

 

Use The Toyota Filter, Better Seal, Made For Your Engine And
No Poss Warranty Problems If Engine Takes A Dump. Cost Is About The Same.

I agree with Taco Trud, Fram is a less than ideal filter. You really do want to stick with Toyota OEM filter,WiX or Mobil1 extended performance. Your engine will thank you.

 

Most any oil filter in the family of oil filters that have the 3/4"-16 threads, 8-11 lb bypass will have a check valve regardless if it is for an application used threaded side up, inverted like the 4.0 Toyota, or sideways like some old Ford trucks; simply because that filter spec is so common on literally millions of vehicles. My 2.7L Tacoma filter cross ref is a NAPA 1348, but 1st change I used the 1516 which is longer, and this time I used the 1515 which is the old standard Ford filter, and also the old Toyota HiLux, Land Cruiser. No real benefit to the larger size except a little more oil, and a lot more capacity for contaminates should I ever be dumb enough to forget to change my oil for a long period of time. A lot of people use Fram, and never have a problem, but cut open a Fram, and 2 or 3 of the premium competitors and you will be surprised at the quality differences. Toyota over the years has used several vendors from Japan and the US to the current Thailand batch, so a Toyota filter is any decent filter of the month with Toyota painted on it, but next week it may be from another vendor. Toyota is busy tending to there worldwide empire, they don't build filters, but they do have a decent spec for those who do.

 

do you guys pay attention on the oil filter when u FIRST change it???

the ones that comes new on the truck is made in japan, and the OEM they sell it to u from the parts from malaysai... I think is more inferior product because why would put a filter from japan on new now selling it parts from malaysia....
and they are different parts # too....
