Okay, I have a 2003 Tacoma Prerunner. It has the TRD off-road package. I noticed a lot of Tacomas have the locking rear differential button on them. I've been looking for this answer for a while but couldn't really find one. One day I was driving around a curve and I looked down and saw a yellow light that said something along the lines of "RR diff lock" or something like that, but it went off and I haven't seen it since. Can somebody explain to me why it would say that then? Or why I can't just push a button to activate it myself? Thanks in advance.

weird, you should have a button on the left of your steering wheel to engage the dif lock. shouldn't activate on it's own. maybe the motor or sensor on your rear dif is bad and thinks it's engaged. when was the last time you changed the rear gear oil?

It's been a while. Do you think that would help? How would I activate it without a button? All I have is the ECT power button.

inspect your rear diff and look for the diff lock motor. if it has one, it should have a button inside to activate it. no point in having the motor there without a switch to activate it.

you sure the light didnt have anything to do with the ABS or traction control?

I'm positive it said either rear diff lock or RR diff lock. Yeah that's what I was thinking, kind of pointless having one without a switch to activate it. But yes it said it in the bottom left corner of the dash.

There was a thread here about an owner that had the e-locker on the rear diff but no button on the dash.
He took off the kick/knee plate of the lower dash and presto! The switch was there but not installed on the dash.

also, the e-locker CAN get water in there after some hits and the contacts get rusty.
This can lead to undesired activation or unable to deactivate or strange dash indications.
