Colorado vs Tacoma

Suprised to see the Tacoma so low in satisfaction......not much better than the Frontier.

 

Well if you have trouble getting with brand new truck home from a dealer, its an issue.

 

Yes and the sales figures for the three refect how dissatisfied we Tacoma owners are. I guess we continue to buy them on the hopes of getting a good one. Doesn't appear to be working because Tacoma sales continue to be through the roof. Oh well when I get rid of my 2016 in ten years or so I sure hope they have improved by then!

Wow, very surprised to see the Colorado/Canyon at 70%, rivaling Taco.

I like how they say "The Tacoma has been completely redesigned for 2016".

 

I live dead nuts in the Massachusetts salt belt. I have a 2008 with original frame. It passed the frame check with flying colors. I bought the truck new in 2007. It's not garaged either. It had some surface rust but no holes. I attribute the clean frame to regular under carriage washing in the winter. Toyota cleaned it up and coated it in August 2014. The treatment has held up well.

 

Yeah if you have nice warm place to wash your truck undercarriage regularly you are exception. Water freezes on contact at -14F. No way to wash truck, and dry it at that temperature.
Exceptions exists but they are not a rule.

 

I found doing this resulted in washing the rust protection (krown or rust chek) off the frame and created more rust!

 

I don't have a place to wash it. I use the under carriage option at the local car wash. Usually once or twice a week during the winter once they start treating the roads. Not so much once winter is over.

It's been working for me the last 8 years. I'm in one of the most heavily salted regions in NE. My truck is not, nor has it ever been garaged.
I do my best to rinse the salt off.

 

I almost bought the Canyon. Good truck, but dealer would not give me a good deal on trade. I loved the Canyon's AutoTrac, black leather/power seats, and fast "zip"...that thing "gets up and goes"... quick. Glad I bought the Tacoma...many surprising features I did not realize until I drove it home . Studied both trucks extensively and drove several models of each before deciding. They are very close...I can give lots of more details if anyone really wants to hear more. Pro and Cons of each...it really came down to money in the end for me.

 

We test drove the Colorado and the Tacoma. The interior was terrible on the Colorado. There's more room in my Tacoma and I just felt...you get more for your money in a Toyota

 

No, no need. I traded in a 6 month old 15 colly for my new Tacoma.

 

I use the ECO Power button when around a few hilly areas or pulling my trailer...much better about the tranny trying to "hunt" gears. Really, its not that bad of problem for me though. The ECO Power button is the same as the Tow/Haul mode button from GM/Chevy (I had it on my 2004 Silverado). It changes the tranny shift points and stays in a gear longer, and more "grunt" off the bottom (leaving stop lights ect...).

 

I agree...the new GM twins are amazing, but so is the new 3rd Gen Tacoma. Note: they both blow my ol' 2013 Tacoma out of the water....I like em both and had a very hard time deciding which to get. Honestly, It came down to Money/trade. Glad I got the new Tacoma, not regretting anything...no issues at all.

 

Automatic on/off headlights/daytime lights are on the new Tacoma...with Premium Technology Package. That was a pleasant surprise I realized when I drove my new truck home a couple weeks ago.

Agreed. I've test drove both and I think the numbers point to that as well.

 

yes, the GM twins will be admired by tall drivers. The moon roof on my Tacoma will be even more of a problem for tall drivers. Lucky, I don't have to worry about any of these issues...at 5' 11" I'm ok. Note: I do have to take my hat off....again moon roof lowers ceiling height by small amount.

 

I just wanted to toss my two cents in because I like to hear myself talk.

With moonshiner in my blood and raised in the deep south, a GM (or domestic of some sort) was always in the driveway. My first truck was a 1989 Chevy S-10 with a small block 305 I pulled out of an old rotted out Nova. We loved Chevrolet, though admittedly sucked it up and drove whatever our wallets could allow from time to time.

So it was only natural that the moment I had a decent paycheck/credit score, I went right out and got my hands on a used 06 Colorado with 35k miles on it, and that's right where my affinity for Chevy ended. The check-engine light came on during the drive home from the dealership. It spent two weeks at the dealer before it was declared fixed. When I picked it up from the dealership the light was back on before I left the parking lot, and it misfired its way back to the service bay. 2 months later I fixed the misfire in my own driveway using youtube, and in the mean time I had replaced 2 window regulators, a defective head unit, and a wheel bearing. Then I promptly drove it out of state and sold it. Now I'm fond of Chevrolet not for the nostalgia or the Americana, but because it's the reason I have a decent tool collection and can impress all my lady friends with my mechanical skill.

That's not to say the new Colorado hasn't tempted me. The raving reviews and the performance of the new model really make me wonder if I should have gone out to take one for a test drive before trading my 2nd Gen Taco in for the 3rd Gen, especially from what I've read in this thread. In the end, though, I don't expect I'll regret my purchase. Toyota seems to make a decent product overall. Truthfully only time can tell.
