The speedometer on my 95.5 Tacoma is stuck at zero, and as I accelerate a loud clicking begins, and increases as I increase my speed. The tach works perfectly, and the odometer seems to be counting fine. The clicking is very loud, loud enough to pretty much drown out the radio, and help would be greatly appreciated, I really have no idea what to be looking for!

Well the odometer runs off the speedometer, so at least you know the time keeping internals are working. Most likely a gear or attatched spindle came of its race. In any case, you need to remove the cluster and open the case up.

The quick and easy way to deal with this is to find a replacement for $100-$150. The manual counters you can change by hand. The more involved would be to open the case up on yours and just see whats going on inside. You can take it to a instrument shop, but they are going to charge you more then what it would cost to buy a new one.

pretty much what he said. either do that, or pay over 100 bucks to replace the one you have. at least if you do it yourself, there's a chance it'll cost you next to nothing

Update: Its currently no longer clicking, but instead the needle jumps around from 0 to the speed im going, and then will sit down at 0 for like half an hour. The odometer is only counting when the needle goes up to my actual speed.. Does this mean its a different problem? Or maybe a combination of multiple things..

Are you trying to find a way to fix this without removing the cluster?

Yeah if I dont have to take the whole dash apart I'll look into doing it myself, however, if it'll be that complicated I'd rather just figure out the problem and get it fixed..

The signal goes from the speed sensor to the cluster. Youre going to need to remove the cluster to figure this out whatever the case.

95-97 Tacomas are cable driven and the speed sensor is built into the cluster not on the T-case like later models. So he'll have to pull the cluster to fix this issue no matter what. The speedometer is a super simple rotating magnet design but I'm not sure how the odometer is driven from that or the electronic speed sensor portion for the ECU (on a 95-97 the only function of the speed sensor is to feed the ECU as the speedometer is driven from the cable).

That's most likely because your speed sensor in the cluster isnt being driven due to the issue in there.

it might just be a broken or disconnected speedometer cable.

take the dash apart and see if it is fully plugged into the speedometer, if it is, grab the inner speedo cable and pull, if it comes out then its broken and needs to be replaced. its not that rare for a speedo cable to snap on you and cause symptoms like you describe but you cant guess, you have to open it up and physically see whats going on behind there
