I just installed an AFE pro dry s airfilter today and some new headlights. I drove it a bit and it was fine. Went to take it out and test my headlights in the dark anddddddd .... I started it up with the clutch in and the revs immediately started dropping and continued to drop below 1000. They got to about 300 and I shut it off. Started it up and it was fine revs sat around 1000. Even though they are sitting at 1000 that is a bit low from what they used to be. They usually stay at 1400-1500 until its warmed up. Now it stays at 1000-1100 right on startup. Could this just be due to having a brand new very clean airfilter on? Or does the computer need to reset?

check all the electrical plugs and vacuum lines, I bet something came unplugged on something you touched, or near something you just worked on

Guess that afe filter really makes a difference.

I've decided on an Ecu reset which I'll do in the morning before I drive to Toyota for that spare tire carrier recall. I had the battery unplugged for my lights but then plugged it back in and did the filter later.

I drove it some more (2 miles) and the idle seems to have set in around 750 but is pretty rough.

Keep driving it. Usually it takes the computer a good 10-25 miles or longer just for it to adjust, report back in the next few days (depending if you drive it)

Is it actually possible for an air filter to cause that much of a difference in the intake?

Yes because it's sucking a lot more air than the stock intake.

Engage Offroad long travel front and rear with some fat tires.
when i swap out filters on mine to clean them, i disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes then reconnect before firing her up... when i don't, i sometimes get wonky RPMs too... i know when you first install the K&N intake, instructions tell you to disconnect the battery prior to install...

ECU reset seems to have done the trick. It settled in at a nice low idle on startup about 1200 then when it warmed up it dropped to about 750 and it was very very smooth. Proof that AFE filters do a good job.

Just curious, did you just drop an AFE filter in the stock airbox? Or a whole new intake?

Cleaned out the airbox and dropped in a filter.
