Well that basically comfirmed what I already knew. Low compression.

The F is front and each dash is a cylinder location. The lower number is the initial psi and the number after the arrow is the psi after I dumped a couple cap fulls of oil into the cylinder.

Ooof. I've made a few boat anchors myself, so it goes. I know it won't make you feel any better, but my Tacoma's engine has lasted me longer than the last 5 engines combined. 22RE, 383 stroker, boosted 355 SBC, boosted 5.0, and a 427 BBC. Grenaded all of them. Technically my wife did in the 22RE, but still, the 1GR-FE is one tough motor if you keep oil in it.

Yeah... I'm still stuck on, where did the oil go. It was doing a few weird things that were hinting at the head gasket going right before it died, but my coolant and everything looks clean so I don't think any mixing occured.

At this point I have 2 choices. A. Pick up another 1GR that I could possibly put in myself or use the opportunity to upgrade to the much more expensive and complex LS swap. I could use a lot more HP out at the dunes and I don't think the 1GR will ever reliably produce enough.

To really have any fun in the dunes you need 500+ hp in a 4000 pound tank. Even 500 horse in a 2000 pound rail gets surprisingly mundane after a couple hours. I vote to find another 1gr and use the bike in the dunes. It would still outrun your truck with an ls motor in the dunes...

But my truck can outrun my bike in the dunes with the 1GR. As long as we aren't going up hill anyway. I don't have much trouble passing my cousin on his modified 450R in the whoops and he's 5th gear pinned.

Huh. Most stock 450's will run at 75mph tapped. Desert guys gear them up a bit, and my WR would do 95 mph flat out. Often times, a 450 dirt bike will win the Baja 1000 overall, against unlimited trophy trucks.

My cousin runs stock gearing at the dunes in his CRF. He gears down for other stuff. I have no problem touching 70mph at the dunes on a long flat or down hill. I usually hit about 40-50 through the whoops. If I'm going up hill though I just lose speed like crazy.

Last fall a guy had his actual race truck at the dunes and I didnt have much trouble playing some cat and mouse with him. He could actually accelerate uphill though and could be a lot more ballsy than me! Had a 500+ CI mid mount motor rear links and front center mount A arms. He caught a hell of a lot more air than you or I probably have. Haha

Ya, last time I was at dumont (steep dunes!) I was running in 3rd gear 4lo just to get up the face of some of them. Looking forward to seeing where your build ends up!

A lot of the steeper stuff here at St Anthony, I'll hit doing 60 mph and I have to turn around about half way up because I lost all my speed. Yet I have watched stock Chevys and Dodges baby through the whoops at the bottom and then climb to the top. My power to weight ratio is terrible. haha. I've tried 4Lo too with no luck. I usually do worse because I can't get as much speed at the bottom.

The 2 biggest things holding me back from the LS is its going to be much harder and since I'll need to work on my welding skills a lot more I'm probably going to need a hell of a lot more help than if I just throw another 1GR in. And 2 is that I will probably have to do a dry sump system since you can't run much of an oil pan on an LS and keep the front diff. Both of those basically come down to money...

I can pick up a remanned 1GR for about $2500 or a used 6.2L Vortec with 100K on it for about $3500, plus remanned 6L80E for about $2200, plus some sort of Tcase and all the other miscellaneous stuff. Plus if I have to dry sump it that's another $3K-$5K at least. It's going to hit $10K plus pretty quick before the dry sump system.

Then when you do get all that power in there you will start breaking stuff. Add $5K per axle and custom drivelines... My vote is still for 1GR. And a trailer. And one of these- http://www.race-dezert.com/classifieds/index.php?ct=sandcar&md=details&id=100095

Yeah... I'd have to baby it for a while until I could afford to beef up the rest of the drive train. Sticking to 33's during that time should help.

That $30K for that sand rail could probably pay for my entire LS swap plus the rest of the drive train! And maybe a front LT kit! haha

Hey man, really love how you color matched your front and rear bumpers! Just curious, did you paint them? Or did a shop did it for you?

@BradyT88 you need to set up a mod list, I'm curious about what you've done

But I'm already a shit load into my Tacoma, so I can't exactly do it over. haha
Cheap ass rattle cans from Walmart. It's just primer. I covered it with clear coat this time around, but it didn't seem to help. I am always gouging them on rocks and come winter they dump sand and salt so I just can't win... Which is why I just keep it cheap and repaint them every year or two.
We'll see if I go through with it or not... I've got a house, a puppy and an F150 now so it'll take a bit longer to save up the money... Logan is probably right about just getting another 1GR. Then I can dump that extra money into a front LT kit and possibly a URD S/C or something.
