Ok so i've heard that a normal gas tank size is 18 gallons. Did i just pull this out of my ass or am i making it up? So I tested it, I ran my truck bone dry untill it didnt even want to turn over. I put excatly a gallon of gas and ran it to the gas station and could only put 15.24 gallons in. So what size of gas tank does a 99 (1st gen) have?

I guess 1.76 gallons of gas sits at the bottom of the tank below the pump siphon?

The 1999 factory documentation states the 5-lug 2WD fuel tank capacity is 15.1 gallons and the 4WD / PreRunner fuel tank capacity is 18.0 gallons.

For one thing - your Taco is designed for regular. For another thing - it takes a while for the ECM to adapt to the different fuel ...

    My 03 has a 18.5 gallon tank.

There's a "reserve" tank so to speak. Whenever you're on E you're not actually empty. Once you're fuel light comes on, you're using the "reserve tank."

What I mean by reserve tank is that the fuel gauge doesn't read the entire gas tank, just a portion of it.

I think the reserve around 2.5 gallons.

So for me, my gas gauge reads how much fuel is left of 16 gallons, not of the whole tank.

Ive never been able to put much more than 16 in my 95.5 tacoma v6. On another note, cant figure out how I can get 200 miles on the first half of the tank, and less than 100 on the second half.

Mother of God. This is a thread revival for the books.

Anyhow, I just wanted to post my findings with my 96 Tacoma 2.7 4x4.

I just recently ran out of gas, and to my surprise, either this year Tacoma did NOT have a low fuel light, or mine is not working.

Also, I used to think that the fuel gauge needle would drop slightly below the "E" line. Mine did no such thing. My engine stalled when my needle was right on the "E" line; causing me a whole lot of headaches. Most of which have not yet been sorted out.

96 does not have a low fuel light. Fail.

Anyway, I put 19.5 gallons in my 1st gen once. Filled to the brim from below E.

Per the 96 FSM, the fuel light is only available with the tachometer equipped instrument cluster. No tach, no light.

I have a 2000 2wd prerunner and when my needle is on E. It will take 15 gallons. I've driven my truck with the needle below E, I'd say a quarter inch below. Then I full up and it took 17 gallons. And my gas light don't work, does yours?
