Is it worth waiting for the bakflip?

I saw a post from someone on here back in September or October that Bakflip covers were 30-60 days out for the 2016. I just called them today and was told that they were 30-60 days out. Sounds like perhaps they may have them someday. I want something that keeps the bed pretty dry and that allows full bed access but honestly don't mind something that sits up on top of the rails rather than down in or that I have to remove for full bed access so long as that can be done somewhat quickly. Seems like people are having problems with water with the Extang covers. Anyone have a good experience with something else? Is it work waiting for the Bakflip to potentially never come out?

You probably talked to Victor. I dont think he has really checked. Been saying 30-60 days out for the past 4 months. It really depends on what you want flush or sits on top. The Extang is the only one available thats sectional. You can get soft covers. Gator FX3 is supposed to be out anytime. The Extang works if you install it correctly but I am not a fan of the covers sitting on top. Some companies have the hard 1 piece available.

I just got an email today from Bakflip saying:
''We have not released any part numbers for that vehicle yet. The Bakflip will be available within the next 30-40 days and the Revolver will be available for that truck within the next 60-90 days."

Heh, I think you were the guy who posted a while back that I was referencing in my post... I don't really mind the cover sitting on top and it seems that it is lower impact to the usability of the bed without the side channels when it is removed. It also seems like you would get an extra inch of vertical space inside with the one that sits on top which could be valuable. Are you saying that the extang seals if you install it correctly? I saw posts from others on here that complained of water infiltration which I really don't want.

I actually like the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 over the Bakflip. The install looks better, the latches and the construction. Also the price is lower in Amazon. $708

The Bakflip was my second choice

I was at a retailer in my city and the salesman called the company. He was told that the backflip would be available on January 11. I will believe it when I see it.

I don't mind the look of either cover. I think the most important thing to me is the seal. The folks I have seen on here with the Extang are having serious leaking issues. I am wondering of those with good seals are just not posting so it is slanted towards those with a negative experience or if I can expect the Extang to leak.

The thing you need to find out is WHICH Extang are they having leak issues with. There is a cheaper model that is like apples vs oranges. See if the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 is the one that is leaking. My guess is no

    This dude:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...tonneau-installed.399526/page-2#post-11122042

There were others too. It is possible that they aren't tightening them down enough or something. I have yet to see anyone with an Extang and a 3rd gen say "it poured rain and my bed was dry".

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, I just haven't seen the post.

Actually I just read that ENTIRE thread (it is a long one) and it seems like some people have issues and others do not and of the ones that have issues some are able to take it from leaking like hell to just leaking a bit by shifting it around and/or tightening it down more. I don't think anyone said they got it to stop leaking completely but I don't need bone dry, just mostly dry so I think I might order one. I really don't want to wait anymore as I can't really leave anything in the bed as is and that is a huge pain in the ass. I also think you are right that the extang is a better look and I like that it is less obtrusive when removed.

I am going to wait for a cover that will create a real seal. I just sold my explorer sport trac that came with a factory installed hard tonneau. Never had a single drop of water in it and it did not matter if I was spraying a hose at it while washing. Completely dry. will keep looking until I see one like that.

I was waiting for the Bakflip, but I found out the the Undercover Flip was released for the '16 Tacoma and both products are practically identical from previous generations. I have my friend looking to order one for me.

yeah, that would be nice but I am not holding my breath. I just ordered the extang. I plan on playing with a hose to see what happens when it gets here. I'll let you know how it goes. I don't need it to be 100% dry, a few little drips are fine for my application, but I want to be able to leave my stuff in the bed without it getting soaked and I want to be able to chuck lightweight loose items in the bed without needing to strap them down while driving down the road. I hope that this cover will do that.

FWIW, I bought it from here:

    http://www.autoaccessoriesgarage.com/Tonneau-Covers/Extang-Solid-Fold-2-0-Tonneau-Cover

and got it for 20% off by calling customer service and asking them to apply a 20% discount as others on this site have done. It was $655.20 shipped which seems to be the lowest price that anyone I have seen on here has paid. It seems like a good price for a good enough product which, while not what I might hope, is good enough for me. Now I just need to find the right snow tires and wheels...

I have also noticed several people that have posted on here they were buying the Solid Fold have not came back on bragging about how they are the nicest thing to come along since puffed wheat. Maybe they are spent $600 to $800 and are not happy with there purchase. I was all set to pop on a Truxedo Lo Pro QT till a guy posted pictures and pointed out he had to grind a little on the side rail. Not a big deal if you have the tools but I don't have. Besides I should not have to grind on a new product.

Yeah, I have lots of tools but I also don't think I should have to alter a new product to make it work. I don't mind altering something to make it do more than it was designed to do but basic function should be there out of the box. I theorize that there is some bias to posting about something like this only if it is causing you trouble. Those that are out there enjoying trouble free operation have little motivation to come here and post about it (although people do seem to like to crow about their trucks on here, I get it, I am really happy with mine and like to post the truck porn pictures as much as the next guy...). When mine gets here (hopefully by Monday or so) and I get it installed I will report back one way or the other as to how it seals regardless of how happy I am about it.

I can assure the Truxedo LoPro does not leak. However I did seal my tailgate.

Take a look at Flex. It is very similar to back flip, but the thing I like is when folded up it does not ride against the cab. Also like the fold a cover G4. It will be out for Gen 3 in a couple weeks. Can't make up my mind.
