    Are floor mats a mod?

Totally correct! As well, there are different profiles of sheave for synthetic. Steel likes a u shaped channel, where's, synthetic, which is a product called Amsteel, likes a profile that is like a flattened u to spread the load. As well, PARAMOUNT! Synth HATES heat! The one thing synth will do that cable won't is melt! Do not drag it at speed under tension over a surface like a non roller fair Lead! Go slow! Also hates grit, which causes the fibers to be cut under load. If you get it really muddy. Pull it out and hose it off when you get home. Having spent most of my life in the marine industry, where synth lines have been used for over 20 years, I have a lot of experience with carbon, Amsteel, spectra and the like.. I will try to put together a little tutorial and post it, but not till next week.

Wait why do all synthetic winches home with a Hawse fair lead instead of a roller?

The fair lead allows the synthetic to feed smoothly as not to get caught in the tight cracks of a roller, where the cable works better with a roller and won't get pinched where the rollers meet on the top/bottom/sides.

Yeah that's what I thought... Tom seems to think it will cause too much friction

Bob is correct, and I did not word that correctly.
I'm saying, don't grind it in at full speed under load where it rubs on the fair lead and heat builds up, or you risk melting the fibers. Synth will definitely get caught up in rollers at oblique Angles.IMO, synth is better. If nothing else, just for the reason that it does not whiplash an much when it breaks. Plus weight, corrosion, flexibility, etc... One just has to be mindful of its properties, and realize that it cannot be abused like cable without shortening the lifespan.

Ok guys find me a modern (last 15 years) off-roading roller fair lead that you could actually pinch ANY line in (thats not a cheap Chinese piece of crap that you shouldnt trust anyways). Always hear that but ever since Warn came out with their design every other manufacture copied it/improved it. Their design pretty much eliminates the ability for line to get pinched. Now in other applications (maritime) damn straight its a real concern!

Other than that its pretty much what twalchlii1 said. You can use steel cable with hawsee's though. Just have to get steel ones (vice aluminum which most are) though id never run that combo.

No matter what you run the best winch is the straightest winch anyways. So using snatch blocks to straightened out the pull (into the winch) is the best bet anyways.

Figured I'd post it here before putting it on Craigslist, anyone interested in buying my bedrack? LT funds demand it, I could also make a few if people were interested

$400 for the one I have,$500 for MkII racks

Ok got it. My simple minded keeper friend broke his 8000 pound winch's synthetic line trying to winch me out. Was the second use of his winch. Now he constantly mocks my winch saying how synthetic is a piece of shit and I only have one last use out of my winch  it's pretty irritating. He spent a lot of money to buy a new Warn zeon but got an 8000 steel cable winch. Seems like a bad idea to me. Shoulda gone bigger.

Anyways, should I be looking for a certain type of snatch block for my "POS synthetic winch"?

Not sure if the flat bottom sheaves have made it to off-roading yet. U shaped will work fine, just not as good for the rope at max loads. As was said earlier by (??) just be careful if the sheave has been used with wire before. Make sure the surface is smooth and has no burrs.

If I needed to use my winch at an angle like it is in this pic, I could see that kind of pull being hazardous to synthetic line. :dunno:
