This question doesn't make sense to me. You said the off road has JBL but no sunroof. That is impossible according to the builds. JBL is only an option on double cabs with tech package, which always comes with a sunroof.

No JBL = Deal breaker for me. JBL completes the system and sounds great. Balanced and great dynamic range at lower volumes. I spent the $3000 on the tech over the additional front wheel drive system.

I have the stock system. It sounds great to me. Coming from a weak 4 speaker '14 Accord, my Tacoma sounds like a Mark Levinson system in a Lexus.

    nice.

I've heard the same from many - don't replace the speakers unless you're adding
and AMP. I decided to go with what the audio guys here were saying and put in a nice AMP
as well, sounds like you had good results without it.

x2 on the stocks, I was pretty surprised at how little there was to them
    both in substance and weight.

JBL requires premium/Technology package and is available on both Sport and OR...this will automatically get you the moon roof (part of the premium/Technology package). Be prepared to pay $ for these awesome features. I am an audiophile and can tell you the JBL (with 440w amp and sub woofer...see this: http://www.jbl.com/content?ContentID=toyota-tacoma-us ) is above and beyond my expectations!

I've always thought that Toyota puts pretty decent stock speakers in their trucks. I was plenty happy with my '06 taco system and just added a sub an amp. So with my' 16 I did the same. Just threw an amp and 10" sub behind my rear seats, I think it sounds great. One day I might replace the speakers, but not until one of them blows out

What sub did you put in and what box did you use? I got the JBL but kind of want to add another small sub behind the driver side rear seat.

The JBL system rocks. One of the best items on the truck.

I love the JBL system. Is it as good as my mb quartz back in the day? No, but for a factory sound it is worth it. Those days are over. lol

Question for those with a JBL system and double cab. It sounds to me like the rear door speakers - left and right have gone down in volume? My settings are at factory for it being centered... If there was one locally for me to compare with I would!!!
So I'm reaching out to see if you guys can confirm that the front speakers sound either the same as the rear speakers in loudness OR the rear speakers sound less in sound? It's a significant difference from the front door speakers to the rear...I could've sworn it sounded louder days ago.

they are two different types of speakers...so they will seem very different. They have to work together to achieve the overall effect that the JBL sound engineers had in mind. Check out this link: http://www.jbl.com/content?ContentID=toyota-tacoma-us

So, I have the DCLB 4x4 OR with sunroof, so I believe I have the JBL system. Honestly? It's pathetic to my ears. I am an audiophile of sorts, but I'm happy with the RF system that came with my Evo. If there is a sub in my Tacoma I have yet to hear it thump. All my EQ settings are at a default, but it seriously lacks clarity as well as lows or highs. Maybe they forgot to install the JBL system in my truck.

Does your head unit have the orange JBL symbol at the bottom in the center? If not you have the non-JBL tech package.

You can get a sunroof (power&Tech package) without the JBL, but you can't get the JBL without the sunroof (power&Tech pachage). If you have the JBL, it clearly says JBL in orange/white letters on your display panel...and the sub is located behind the passenger back seat (it's encased along with a 440 watt amp that's hidden inside)...now it can really thump when you push it! But, it's tame enough to blend and be "balanced" with all the rest of the "tuned" speakers throughout the cab...that's what I love about it.
On my last Tacoma, I had a audio shop install a 300 watt sub to my factory stereo...It was awful and unbalanced because it was "wild and untamed". Some bass notes would "loudly stick out" and dominate the music, while other notes could not even be heard. He tried everything to get it "balanced"...no luck, so I finally gave up on the whole thing.
Anyway, if you really do have the JBL, then it's a matter if taste/preference disagreement...and neither one is right or wrong. Guess that's why we are all allowed to give our opinions on this site :)

Ha! Well, that explains it, I don't have the JBL package. I feel a little less bad about not liking the stock system now :)

I guess I should figure out my options, something nice but not super high end that plays well with the head unit and will give some much needed life to the metal I listen to \m/

Well since I don't have my truck in hand yet, I can't comment on the sound of the JBL. However I made sure to buy a truck with it. I just finished ripping my Focal/JL system out of my Xterra. While I loved the sound, I decided I really don't want to go through all of the work again and pull door panels, introduce rattles, chase wires... I like the JBL in my dads Tundra, not perfect, but I could be happy enough daily.

    We'll see later this week...
