My 2004 Tacoma was in a flood and am trying to revive it (Paid off.) Any suggestions would be great.
I have only been able to get back in to look at it once.
    Here is what I found;
Flood was up to the top of the hood of truck.
Air filter was wet however water did not seen to enter engine from air intake.
No power when key is turned.
I will try to dry it out once the power is back on.
Suggestions?? Other than a new truck.

Sorry for the flood and damage. Insurance? If so, will probably be totaled. Use the money to buy new.

    Fresh or salt water?

    Clean or stagnate water?

Are you really good with electronics?

If the motor wasn't running when it submerged, all the fluids can be drained/replaced w/o much consequence.

Upholstery can be dried, cleaned, refreshed.

But the electronics........ you could be lucky. Or not. And have a lifetime of niggling corrosion issues.

I'll assume you have replace the ECU and various control modules. You'd want to pull apart, clean, dry and lube every harness connection (that's a lot)

    Assuming you don't want a new Tacoma...:puke:

Pull a spark plug, check if there's water in the cylinders. Probably should change the oil to be on the safe side, and the air filter of course. You may need a new battery as well.
I would strip the interior completely so the carpet, seats, etc can dry out completely. Pop the kick panels off and go through the electrical connections one by one, dry them out and hit them with some dielectric grease before reassembling (this is assuming the flood water was fresh water - if it was salt water, you need to thoroughly rinse and scrub each connector to get all the salt out).

I wouldn't say the ECU is necessarily shot, as long as you get it all dried out before putting power to it.

One the water gets in the less protected interior harnesses, corrosion in the wires and terminals never sleeps. It'll be fine for a while then the weird elec problems start.

Look for and buy the same one wrecked or rolled, swap over electricals and whatever else you need. Part the rest of the wreck

Was a result of overland flooding, truck was not running, and in the water for about 4-8 hours. I am ok with low volt (phone type items) and may give it a go.

Damn…! 4-8 hours?! That's a seriously long time. I will assume it wasn't salt water then.

ECU is fried, that is your reason for no power, unless it is still wet inside. You could try to dry it out but given that you already tried running power through it, you most likely short circuited the board. Remove, inspect it, dry off if needed, dump it in rice if it was wet, you can attempt to reinstall it and try it, but be ready to dish out for an ECU.

Drain and refill all the fluids. Dry out the interior, if the filter was dirty, just replace it instead of letting it dry out. Pull a plug and make sure that there isn't water in there and if there is take a long blow tip and blow out each cylinder individually with it to make sure all the water is out of it. Go through as many harness connectors as you possibly can and spray WD-40 on them. It should displace the water inside of the terminals. Especially for your interior plugs. Let us know what happens and good luck.

Oh and one more thing. Do yourself a favor and don't use your truck as a submarine again. Lol.

I disconnected the battery and checked it. It wouldn't power a 12v dc cord with a led, so I am hopeful the ecm isn't fried. I will try to put a heater blower on everything and try to dry it all out. If I can't get it going by Sunday it may be time for a new truck.

If it's in a garage and you have (or have access to) a dehumidifier, run that.

Just to clarify. With the battery terminals disconnected, you attempted to power up a 12V DC tool and the tool would not power up?

If that is the case, you may want to consider replacing the battery. Get it properly tested first however, If you have a multimeter, just hook up the leads and look for 12.6VDC if it's under 9.6V and it is old, don't even bother trying to save it.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
The electronics would be the only major concern. Everything else would still be mechanically sound after you drained all the fluids and replaced them. Probably have to do that twice or three times to get all the water out because it's not all going to come out at once.

Ok battery is at 8.7v charging it up. Water dosn't look to be the engine. Have had a heater blower on it for the last day (should have been sooner but I live/work in the flood zone in Missouri. So I'll hook the battery up Saturday and see if anything happens. I am looking at new trucks to be on the informed side, in case I need to go that route.

Pull all the spark plugs and disconnect the ignition before you crank it up. After you turn it over a couple times, put it back together.

You risk bending a connecting rod if you don't get the water out of the cylinders

Well it seems that it's dead. Not even a click with new battery. Lots of problems. I know its bad when the radio is on when everything is turned off. 2016 is now here.

it honestly could still be a number of things but throwing money at it may prove fruitless in the end anyway :(
