Time to buy some new tires for my 2013 V6 OR. I like the 255/75-17 Cooper ST Maxx in a Load Range C and would be willing to buy four 17" rims for $250-$300 off Craigslist to get these. The tires weigh 52.6 pounds each. Currently I'm getting 17-18mpg's with the stock 265/70-16 tires which weigh 38 pounds.

Any idea what my MPG hit will be with these tires?

Another option is the 16" Cooper AT3 C or ATP C which weigh 46lbs (265/75-16). Don't know how important the 6 pound/tire weight difference is between the two sizes.... I tend to over analyze things :)

Any thoughts from people who have been down this road before?

    Thanks,
    Trvlngnrs

You will likely take a minimum of about two MPG loss by going to bigger/heavier tires. I went from the stock Dunflops to BFG A/T KO2 265/70/17 (load range C) and am currently tracking a 1.4 MPG loss. There's plenty of threads here at TW that detail various rim/tire set-ups and MPG numbers.

Unsprung wt is your enemy, for many reasons.

If you select tires to meet your usage of the vehicle, and something else is compromised, well, that's the cost of functionality.

If you select tires to be big and purdy, and something else is compromised, well, that's the cost of purdy!

Good to know. I looked up your tires, they are 45lbs, so that gives me something to compare with....

    Thanks!

Mine is a daily driver, so I analyze and worry about tire weight myself... but I'm not too sure how accurate those Cooper weights are. I've found that Cooper is one of the toughest manufacturers to find weight specs on. I've even emailed them about it and they never wrote back. If you're going by Tread Depot, then I should point out that they have the 255/75R17 ( C rated ) as 2 lbs heavier than the 255/80R17 ( E rated), which makes no gdamn sense. This leads me to believe that even Tread Depot's numbers are suspect. But.... Maxx's and KO2's are some of the heaviest A/T tires regardless. You'll take a bit of MPG hit. But they're also bomb-proof from what I've read.

I put 255/75/17 BFG mud-terrains on mine and lost about 3mpg.

    Good to know thank you!

I may just get the Cooper AT3 C- everything I read about them is good! They are lighter and they have them in a 265/75-16 so I wont have to get new wheels. Not quite as aggressive as I prefer, but the MPG's will be better.

I saw someone post one time, smiles per gallon > miles per gallon. Sums it up pretty good I think.
