Gas Mileage Issues

with lift and tires when you show 13 to 14 with speedo off you are actually getting about 15 to 15.5. With hyw speeds and until you learn the gears especially with the lift on the hyw with those mud tires that's about right. Wind on hyw is huge in any truck. I am averaging 21 to 23 daily to work 40 miles to work and 40 miles back. When I was going against this wind in Oklahoma this last week I was at 15 instead of 21 to 23 and that is stock tires and no lift. My 15 tundra would of been about 11 against that wind. Anyway normal average hyw driving if wind aint crazy nd you calculate for the mileage you are off not being calibrated and learn tranny you should get about 17 with that set up Hyw. And id say 17 in town too.

I traded a 15 tundra crew I averaged 15 with it not lifted and buddy has a 15 tundra lifted with mud tires and 35s and he gets 11 on his et up. My stock Tacoma dbl cb v6 auto 4x4 sport is averaging 21.4 and I have had it now almost 3 weeks and 2150 miles on it so far. 80% hyw and 20% city. Hyw speeds are 65 to 72. No major hills but not flat because Bartlesville ok is in valley and Tulsa is where I commute daily too. I am so happy with 21.4 from 15 . I had an 09 Honda ridgeline from 09 to 14 and put 155k on it and it averaged 19.2. So this is better than that truck. Plus it is an off road beast!!

 

I started off getting 14.1. I now have 1500 miles on my truck and I'm getting 15.6. The truck is new and tight still. Plus my speedometer is off by 6% so when I do the math I'm really getting 16.4 on average.

I have your Taco's brother ... TRD OR DCSB AUTO 4X4 WHITE .... I have 7300 miles and average 16.5 mpg on computer and by manual calculations. Mostly highway driving, but mpg is increasing over time.

 

its good to buy a truck lifted from the dealer because if you get an "after market lift" (yes i know this is after market but toyota put it on) i messes up a lot of possible warranty work down the road, but because toyota/dealer installed before purchase it should NOT VOID ANY WARRANTY!

 

Yeah doing the math with the bigger tires it's actually getting 5% better so I feel a little better.

I was getting 23.5mpg off the lot. Changed to BFG KO2 "E" load tires and removed my air dam, dropped to 18mpg. For some reason, in the past couple of days, it has crept back up to 19-19.5mpg. I'm not sure if it is the fuel (where I buy it) or if my driving is changing, etc.
One question that I have is on the computer algorithm that calculates the mpg. A larger diameter wheel/tire combo would roll over less times in a given distance. Does this not change the speedometer and the calculated mpgs? If so, by how much? Can we even trust the readouts if we are outside of "stock" sizes?

 

It's also very possible you will get better mileage once it warms up and they switch from winter gas to summer gas. Due to cold they need to modify the gas by adding butane which helps cold starting but has fewer Btu's and thus does less work.

Regardless, be glad gas is cheap these days and enjoy the truck!

 

I get about 19mpg with 50% being on the highway with hills on my double cab trd 4x4 sport. Looks like your lift and tires has taken a chunk out of your mgs's. I gained about 2 mpg after breaking in the engine.....in my case was around 500 miles. This is unfortunately the only reason why I chose not to lift or change my tires. I only off-road 10-15 times a yr so stock will suffice.

 

There is a difference. Depending on the size of your tires it can be quite severe. I would recommend using a tire size calculator (there is one linked to TW) and seeing exactly what kind of difference you are experiencing. For reference I have TOYO 285/70/17's that are approximately (if I remember correctly) 7% larger so both my Speedo and fuel economy calculations are off by a factor of 7%.

As a side note you can purchase an ultra-gauge that will calculate real time the difference in speed and fuel economy for you. I have one because I'm lazy and don't like doing math constantly

I have a 2wd, V6, automatic and averaging just under 12.5 mpg on the display. I just pass 100 miles on odometer. My question is this normal mpg for I guess break in period. Should I contact the dealer and have them check it out. The truck is stock, ECT is off, and I'm light on the gas pedal.

 

Break in. Mine started slowly going up after the first 500 miles. The truck is still learning you. I've also noticed it improves considerably as you're driving once the motor warms up.

 

I have almost 3k on my 2016 and have not had any noticeable break-in improvements. I have become more "used" to driving the vehicle and that's about it. believe the "break in" theory is over-stated and a bit of a fallacy.

 

It mentions one in the manual, says it takes a couple hundred miles up to the first thousand.

 

and do not forget that your MPGs will increase with engine break in. Not sure about the new ones but mine gained 3 - 4 after 5000 miles. Service writer at the dealer said he has seen Tundras improve up to 10k.

I drive in city mostly with some highway. About 85 city and 15 highway. I've been averaging about 11.3 mpg. Pretty pathetic. My 2005 tundra 4.7 v8 did that. But it was much quicker off the line. Highway gauge tells me 16.3 mpg. But, it is rare.

It is winter (winter gas), warmed up a few times, been hitting the gas to get a feel for the truck, and have done a few donuts with traction control off, but still pathetic.

Hope to see some improvement. I would be happy with 15 city and 22 highway. Or I will be happy with a serving of "deal with it."
