I just ordered a White 2016 Dual Cab Off Road with the 6 speed manual. This will be replacing my 2008 Wrangler 2dr Sahara- just out grew that car with the family.

I have been told it will be about 4 months till I see the Tacoma- April 2016. Based on what I am reading online that even seems optimistic.

Any thoughts on the timing for Toyota to release the 2017? Wondering if I should just wait for the 2017 at this point- resale value of a newer model year, maybe some small fixes/improvements, etc.

    thanks!!

Yes. If your current vehicle is still reliable then I would wait. By the time the 2017s come out there will be more news on the 2017 midsize trucks from other manufacturers (Nissan, Honda, Ford ) that might also pique your interest.

1st year with the new design, I'd wait until summer for the new one to let them work out the issues.

I agree. anytime anyone over 4ft tall rides behind me I have to move my seat forward, making it uncomfortable for me.

Thanks for the feedback. The Tacoma is as big as I can go- we have a tight driveway/garage- the tacoma will be a tight fit...anything bigger would be an problem. The issue with the jeep is really the 2 doors- getting in the back was easy for the kids when they were younger- now at 10 and 12 years and all their sports stuff it is an issue. The wrangler has basically zero trunk room.

Based on prior message though I think I should do more size testing with the kids in the back. I just eye balled it last time and thought it was plenty big.

Think we are looking at summer time for the 2017 Tacomas to start shipping?

    regards

Thats a good point. Im just starting to call for prices and if I cant get one until late spring I might as well wait for the 2017's. But Im guessing Toyota wont release any specs until that last minute for the 17's so we wont know what changes are coming.

This is Toyota....do you really think there will be any real changes for 2017 aside from bug fixes behind the scenes.

My guess would be the 2017 will be identical to the 2016...

Maybe wait until 2026 for the Gen 4 release

I love the 4Runner. I have just wanted a pickup for a long time. This is not my primary vehicle (honda accord), but more of a fun car for mainly recreational purposes. I would much prefer a manual transmission and the ability to load my motorcycle (bed extender ordered) and other toys without having to deal with cargo boxes and racks.

Need to do size testing with kids in the back. The only reason I could see waiting for the 17 is probably the resale value may be better when I sell it in 6-8 years. I agree that changes will probably be about zero.

i have a tacoma double cab and a wrangler jk bought brand new same time. The JK actually has plenty of room with 4 doors and carries lots of storage in the rear. I didn't know the 2doors lack such space. We ended up taking my wife's 4 door jk to tahoe and it worked great. We wanted to use mine, but my cover did not show up yet and we lack storage in my truck since it was snowing.

How tall are you? Even though the kids are small the room in the back seat is pretty limited.

I am 6' 4" and while I have plenty of room/head room, anyone who sits behind me is not going to be that comfortable.

    Cargo
The two-door 2016 Jeep Wrangler has 12.8 cubic feet of space behind the back seat and 56.5 cubic feet with the back seat folded, which is below average for the class. The back seat can be removed to create a maximum of 61.2 cubic feet of cargo space, though reviewers note that the seat is heavy. The four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has 31.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat in use and 70.6 cubic feet with the rear seat folded, which is one of the larger overall cargo capacities in the compact SUV class.

^ This, plus the OP said his kids are 10 and 12 so they are or will be growing like weeds over the next few years.

6'0 height. But I do like to sit further back. Based on how we used the Wrangler...most trips in this vehicle with the family will be 60 minutes or less. Will bring my wife and daughters with me to the dealership in the next few days. I really have my head/heart set on the Tacoma- sure hope we can make it work. It has to be better vs what I have them doing today in the Wrangler. Today...they are fine with the room in the wrangler...just getting in and dealing with bags is the issue.

Great forum...thanks for the genuine advice.

I hate to say this, but if you are looking for a mid size pickup, the Colorado has more passenger space in the rear than the Taco. While I love my Taco and wouldn't trade it in for anything else, it really comes down to what you need in the truck. For me, I dont carry people in the back maybe more than 5 times a year so the Taco works for me. While I dont think the build quality of the colorado is the best, some colorado owners would say different.

Have you taken a '16 home and test fit it in the garage?

If it fits, and you have a bit of walk around room, you have a decent size garage, at least length wise.

If you haven't tried it, I would. Before counting on the fact that it will clear everything.
