I think TOYOTA won't be liable. I can almost guarantee you that in the manual somewhere, it says to check your mirrors regardless.

This on the other hand would leave TOYOTA liable. and you will be able to sue the crap out of TOYOTA.

BTW @2016_dbag , Love your signature quote!!! ;P haha

I wish I could find the article I saw a few months ago during the summer.
A local university here in the greater toronto area did a test on the blind spot systems of cars now days.
They found it doesn't always activate for motorcycles which is suspected to cause the higher than usual motorcycle accidents that we had this year.
It also went on to say that people are getting to reliant on these systems and that they should be used to aid but not complete a full lane change. Even if it says its safe you should still be doing a shoulder check (or if you have the aspherical mirror thing)

    Warning in the manual:

The Blind Spot Monitor function is a supplementary function which alerts the driver that a vehicle is present in the blind spot. Do not overly rely on the Blind Spot Monitor function. The function cannot judge if it is safe to change lanes, therefore over reliance could cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

I think my right rear sensor is faulty because the BSM system fails when a car passes on the right. Has yours failed since it was replaced?

Same would happen to me. They change the rt side view mirror and that didn't work. But after changing the rear sensor i haven't had a problem.

I think the reason for this thread was to get the blindspot monitor problem fixed. I (like everyone else) paid a lot of money for the technology package and I would like it to work as advertised. Disappointed at how early this thing failed.

Anyone got a real fix yet? only the rear sensor replacement is needed?

Take it to dealer get sensors checked and one might need to be replaced. Someone else shared this as their experience somewhere on here.

My BSM problem was fixed under warranty. It took about 2 months after they opened my case with toyota. I will look at the work order and share exactly what was changed. It was some sensor and /or ECU that had to be replaced. Last night the BSM worked perfectly!! Finally what a relief.

I'm curious why it took 2 months. When I took mine in for the BSM issue a week before Thanksgiving they diagnosed it as a right rear sensor or ECU malfunction. Took about an hour to diagnose, a week to get the part, and about four hours to do the repair. The work order explains it as:

"Inspection found code C1AB3 short to ground in outer mirror indicator (slave). Replaced right rear blind spot monitor ECU, as per case 15230493."

Have not had an issue on just over two weeks since it was done.

My bsm quit working during the first snow here in Milwaukee. I requested mud guards from the factory and they never were installed from the port. Snow and mud gets kicked up into the bumper and the bsm is not well sealed. I'm sure Toyota will figure this out before someone dies right?

No, Toyota will not figure it out. It is a conspiracy to lull drivers to be less safe. :D Your last sentence is sarcastic, right?

How long have people been driving without the bsm system? BSM is a supplement safety feature. It does not take away the drivers responsibility to check their surroundings before changing lanes, etc. In bad weather sensors are going to get covered.

Yes I'm being sarcastic. But the ice and snow did ruin the sensors, not just a temporary problem. It will be fixed under warranty and then I'll make sure to install some mud guards.
