    HAhahaha. If someone COULD, it would've been done a long time ago because they have always lacked power.

    Your obviously not computer savvy..

    If you know so much about Tacoma's why don't you tell me who is the supplier for their ECU's.. that could save save us allot of time.

    Find proof that a person can access the ECU and do a custom tune. The 4.0 V6 has been around a long time, show us where we can get one tuned?

    @tacitos

    It makes perfect sense. I'm always amazed by the people who say (in regards to a computer) "you can't do anything to it". If there is a place to link in.. You can modify it. If there isn't a place to hook in... You can solder a port and link up. I'm sitting here typing this on an iPhone... It's been jailbroken. Duh.

    Find the right computer geek with the time and interest... And you can do it. Hell... Send the info to "Annonymous" and tell them ISIS said they could never find their secret plans which are hidden there... It will be hacked open tomorrow.

    Time and energy vs reward and payout.

    I can't prove that it can be done on the Tacoma yet... But I can prove it can be done on a variety of motorcycle ECU's. If you actually do some research in this field you will find there are a handfull of ECU manufacturers in the world. All vehicle manufacturers source their ECU's from the same group of suppliers. The ECU's are built to their manufactures spec, but the underlying operating systems are all the same.

    Don't be afraid to back out of this conversation, it can get above your head real quick.

    Reading though the posts again I don't see anything that indicates @tacitos ever said anyone has hacked into and reprogrammed a Tacoma. He mearly stated he has had similar work done on a motorcycle and he is interested in finding out what his friend thinks of modifing a Tacoma. Sheesh.

    Yep, it's likely his friend will look at it or do a little research and say something like "Toyota has that stuff on lockdown and it's not worth the time and effort required to hack it". But why not look into it? Somewhere out there is some kid with a computer and way too much time on his hands. You do realize Tacomas aren't grown in the wild... They are built by people and therefore can be manipulated by people.

    Always amazed when someone says "That can't be done". The truth is YOU can't do it (nor can I for the record).

    I also can't climb Mt Everest... But I have read about people who have.

    I don't give a shit about a motorcycle or any other vehicle. No shit a lot of companies make chips, you can buy programmers, hell if you got a chevy the software for custom tunes is easily available and quite reasonably priced(as compared to some).
    So, you claiming your buddy can do something that hasn't been done in years and get you a custom tune on you're Toyota, but yet it hasn't been done?

    I'm claiming my buddy has more experience than most successfully hacking ECU's. I'm also claiming that your arguments show your lack of knowledge in this field.

    If I'm wrong about you, then please tell me who manufactures the ECU for 2016 Tacoma.. or at least tell me where its installed so I can dig it out when I pick mine up.

    This is why we can't have nice things.

    I heard there was this guy who claims he can hack an iPhone. Liar... Can't be done! Apple is locked down!!

    Ooo. Maybe your buddy can make the "ETC" button add extra horsepower, like say a 100hp at the push of a button. He does sounds like a genius

    mail me your ECU, It could take a few weeks to determine if its doable.. then it could take a few months to decrypt and translate the maps into plain english.

    So everyone everywhere should stop trying and just call it a day?

    Alright people... That's it. 2015 is done and we have done as much as the human race should do. Pack it up. The moon was the limit and we have gone as deep in the oceans as we need. Bring all the satellites back and stop all medical research. Cancer is pretty close with the whole radiation thing and AIDs seemed hard anyway.

    ETC can probably be setup to change fuel maps. You could probably gain an extra 10-15 hp on the dyno with that.. you know what a dyno is right?

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
    @tacitos

    The Toyota ECU's are encrypted and locked down tight. Without proper Toyota provided software, its nearly impossible to remap.

    @gottaToy

    YOU should do some reading before spouting off. The Toyota ECU has been cracked by Bully Dog who provides custom maps for the Tacoma (4.0) and Tundra (5.7). IIRC, it took a few years of work by professional programmers to break it. As such, they don't share their knowledge; to get a map done you need to order their tuner and they will provide maps IAW your desires/specs. That said, I don't think they offer custom tunes for the Tacoma, only premade tunes.

    I don't know if the old encryption is carried over for the 2016 but since this is a Lexus engine, probably not.
