    If money is tight, 87

If you care about your motor and want better mileage, 89

If your driving a performance vehicle, 91

Don't drive for performance but do care about my motor. I've never noted detonation (modern is great).

    Please explain what I'm missing?

I have a small garage with a lot of toys..

My motorcycles and M235 get 91 all the time. My X5 and backup car get 89. My Tacoma will be getting 89.

If I run anything less than 91 on my motorcycles or M235, the engines do not run as well and in some cases I do get detonation.

If I run 91 or 89 in the X5 there is little difference other than range. But it takes 2 tanks before the gas range is increased.

Ok my BMW & bike manuals stipulate higher octane as well but, my yotes do not...so...I'm cornfused. :)

And talking about recip engines my old Cessna 150 required 100LL...really but, I don't see how it relates to my Toyota.

What your other vehicles need is irrelevant.

Any more than the needed amount of octane to prevent detonation is not making your engine run any better. It could actually be costing a very slight amount of power from the slower burn rate.

All this engine needs is 87 octane. Any more than that, and you are wasting your money to make yourself feel better about buying "better" gas. It will not make it run better. Other engine's requirements are different and are not comparable. PERIOD.

I've had X5's for over 10 years, and I've tested the different octanes. I'll be doing the same with the Tacoma.

Your right, but the fact that other vehicles are more sensitive to different octane's proves that there is a difference in the composition of different octanes.
