Auto-LSD question...drifting/powersliding

I realize this is not a typical question, and certainly not the primary use for buying a Tacoma but...

I'm considering a 2009-2013 Tacoma to replace my 15yr old Nissan Frontier. I know this is very juvenile but one of my favorite features on my current truck is the mechanical LSD, as it allows me to powerslide my truck around paved corners in the rain (my truck doesn't have nearly enough power to hang the tail out on dry pavement).

Does anyone know if the Auto-LSD in the 2nd gen Tacoma's works well enough to get both rear wheels spinning if you goose the throttle when going around a corner?

Not sure on rear end lsd, but I think pre 2008 does not have traction control that would allow it. Pretty sure any time I slip a tire traction control retards everything. You can turn it off but anytime over 40 it turns itself back on.

The TRD off road pre runner has a locking diff that would allow you to power slide anywhere. The 4wd only allows you to lock it in 4lo.

DrFunker, that's a great video. Yeah, exactly like that. The best part about having the optional 4x4 is that when you finally get stuck, you can turn it on and drive home.

Nickel - Thanks for the info about the traction control automatically turning on in the 2008's and later. That's a definite joy kill and deal breaker for me, so I guess instead of looking for a 2009-2013 that I'll have to confine my search to 2005-2007. Locker is great for offroad, but not what I want for daily driving on pavement. But hey, didn't Toyota offer an actual mechanical LSD back in 2005?

StevoNB, thanks for clearing that up. It sounds like I need to look for an 05-08 TRD sport, but I thought I just read somewhere that those years had rust issues. Now I have to research rust, ugh. On the plus side, there would probably be 10 times the amount of issues I'd have to research if I was considering buying another Nissan : )

 

In my 15, auto lsd will drift in snow very easily, but I've never tried on pavement. Maybe next spring when I put the shitty dunlops back on. The real issue would be the fact that, with auto lsd on, vsc is never fully defeated. It allows more slip angle when it's off, but always limits how far sideways you can get.

Or buy a recent model 4x4 TRD OR and do the rear locker mod then you can perform the power slide when desired and when you finally get stuck in 2Hi, put in 4hi and get unstuck.

I rear lock mine often in wet pavement and grin.

 

I can shut mine off bh hilding the anti slip button and then I can fish tail and donuts all day long, wet snowy pavement that is. No dry pavement. I have a 2011 TX Pro

Are you referring to me? What do you mean by in before the lock?

When K drive without turning off the limited slip my tires will lock up and straighten me out and I looose half power. I can push (2 hi) lsd and hold it to turn lsd off then O can power slide and loose no power. Both wheels spin.

 

EdinCincinnati, thanks for your suggestion. The rear locker would be a fantastic solution for drifting on loose surfaces like snow and gravel and dirt. I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to drift on wet paved roads. I suspect that if I had my rear locked, it would be real easy to initiate a drift, but as soon as my power slide came to an end and needed to finish turning around a corner that I'd be in trouble unless I could unlock my rear diff instantaneously. Thus the LSD seems like the most practical solution for doing the occasional street drift.

 

Sliding on wet paved roads in a neighborhood might just end in a wreck.
