Alright then...showing my ignorance here, but I have not been able to determine when Toyota left manual hubs behind, nor exactly how my 2009 Tacoma's front "hubs" lock.

Are these hubs always "locked in"? Or is it operated with a vacuum or heat actuator?

I had to ask! My '91 Toyota was "old school", as well as my current Fords, and I need to kknow how it works!

Thanks for educating (and humoring) me!

Hubs are always "locked", but there is an axel disconect.

I don't think that's the case on the 05+. If it is then I've been putting a lot of unnecessary miles on my front drivetain. ;)

I'm pretty sure I have imprints in my frame from where it's been supported all these years.

I belive its the same as the first gen system. There is an axel disconnect on the right side of the diff. Figs. DF-16 and DF-17 show it in detail:

no more old shool hubs to lock, just 1. read the manual (hint) , 2. go to 4 hi below 60mph if I recall (take hint myself and reread manual)

should be a sticker on the visor too. (dont try to read it at 60 mph) .

...so do you go xc skiing with Santa btw?:rofl:

    crap!

vacuum actuator was on my ol 87 dodge that didnt want to go into 4wd, I rolled that thing down a steep bank when it was sliding on ice and into a big creek, must of been 18" deep lucky for me. I wont fault the BFG A.T. tires, they were brought to the ice by me, but I wont use them on hardpack or ice.

And now you know why I preach snow tires and preventative maintainance.

Ahh! Disconnect at the differential! True, we're in the same boat as the previous generation trucks.

I was thinking of the Fords I've own(ed). The hubs have a manual locking mechanism that keeps the axles from turning unnecessarily. I had a 1995 Ford with automatic hubs that I thrashed weekly. Seriously, it took me 3 sets before I swapped out to Warn manual hubs on that thing. My current diesel holds up well with the manual hubs.

Our Tacomas don't have the option of keeping the front axles from turning, but the front differential is another story. Damn you for being right yet again, Chris! :bananadead:

Unrelated, I'm so drunk right now.

I'm just guessing now, but I think the parasitic loss for that is 1-2 mph. At 26 mph summer and 22 last elk trip thats ok wit me
