Could a stuck open pcv really cause all the problems you were having?

Well, yeah. If it's stuck it can explain the oil consumption...which is likely what has lead to my other problems (slight knocking sounds).

That's awesome to hear dude. I'm still having trouble believing that little Yota 4 banger was on its last leg. Seems too young to be having those kinds of problems :notsure: fingers crossed for ya!!

I am at this point worried that I have had the problem long enough that damage was done. This might be a temporary fix but I think there is more to it.

Hoping for the best. Was the oil ever detrimentally low? Of course knocking isn't good but hopefully you were able to catch it in time.

A few times but never low enough for the light to come on and I did my best to top it off once I realized how much I was actually burning.

When that light comes on the engine is already toasted.

I was wondering when it came on. I always heard it popped on with low oil, so I assumed if the oil got to a dangerous level, it would pop on. The truck seems to run fine when full. If I can stop losing oil then I might be ok.

It's funny because part of me is like "FINALLLYY" but then realistic Gage that understands he needs to save for the near future is crying at the idea of having to do this. I am finally going to start donating plasma and I am going to just keep the money earned from that tucked away. It should be ~3k come this time next year...who knows what I would do with that.

It measures low oil pressure, essentially they dont turn on till there is 0. Worthless light.

Not to dash your hopes, but my engine died without the oil light ever coming on...

Lol, I don't have high hopes. There has been an audible knocking sound when it gets low and recently I think it has gotten worse. I could be paranoid but I don't think stopping the crazy oil consumption will be the last of my problems. It is a 4banger though and these engines have been known to take some serious abuse without dying.

My friend does it religiously for beer money. If you go 2x a week then it comes out to ~$250-$300 a month.

That's what I am sayin! It could certainly be a nice christmas present to myself if I go through with it. Some people really can't handle the needle and feel super drained afterwards but I doubt I would have a problem. The only thing that sucks is you need 45 min to an hour out of the day to do it.

Well I went in and paid for the service done. It came out around $100 for the diagnose, part, and install. I talked to him about it for a bit and he showed me the old pcv valve to show me what to look for. He attempted to clean it up to re-use it but it would not seal. He mentioned that for some reason he sees this problem a lot with Toyota's. His daughter blew up a camry engine on a small trip because hers got stuck and sucked her engine dry.

If you take it off you should be able to shake it and hear an audible rattling sound. Then blow into it. The way they are designed, it should close with pressure and release with no pressure. So if you blow into it and air can get through, you need to change it. This is what we believe was probably my initial problem that eventually just got worse and stuck which then it would begin sucking even more oil. Assuming I make it to my next oil change without a problem, I will begin removing and inspecting it every oil change.

I did change this part already...so that means it failed since the time I installed it in september. Any ideas on why that might be? Maybe I just had a streak of bad luck and received a defective PCV from the start.

Sounds like there's hope! Good info man. So this is the 3rd pcv valve now?
