Woody's Quicksand Build

I decided to create a build thread to keep track of what I've done so far to my 2016 Tacoma. This site's been great for finding information and learning from other Tacoma owners, hoping that this thread will help someone else as well.

My Truck:

2016 DCSBOR 4x4 AT in Quicksand, Tow Package, All Weather Mats & Sills, Predator Steps and Rear Bed Step. I ordered it without the Premium and Technology package, mainly based on the fact that I didn't want a sunroof as it felt very claustrophobic to me with the headliner being that low, but also based on being able to save $2-3k without it. I paid $34,449.00, the window sticker was $36,408.00 and my dealer (Brent Brown Toyota in Utah) shipped it in for free from a dealer in California which took about 7 days:


Here's a picture 2 days before Thanksgiving and the night I picked it up:


Because the truck came from California they had already installed the front license plate bracket, which most dealers in Utah don't do, and drives me nuts. I removed it and covered the screw holes with some plastic clips from Autozone. I think it turned out pretty clean considering:


Shortly after purchasing the truck I realized the 3rd Gen's don't come with a Head Rail pre-installed in the bed. Dealer wanted $55, but I found one online here, shipped to my door for $43.14:


Next I tinted the front windows to 35% and put in a much needed

Next I ordered my tonneau cover. I went with an Extang Solid Fold 2.0 (model 83830) as I had very good luck with the original version on my 2007 Tacoma. I ordered it from Luke at Truck Alterations. He gave me a great price at $680.00 shipped.


I found some great deals on rims, tires and lift over the Black Friday/Cyber Monday holiday. So I splurged and bought everything I'd need to finish her off.

I got an Icon Stage 2 lift from for $1654 shipped.
I got some 285/70/17 BFG KO2's from Low Range Offroad here in Utah for $225 a piece.
I also ordered the TRD Pro wheels from them as well for $854 out the door.

Once everything came in, I got to installing. Lift went on fairly easy. The front was very straight forward and took me less than 2 hours taking my time. I knew my rear would be slightly higher than normal as I planned on leaving in the factory overload leaf for towing and hauling so I turned the adjustment collar on the coilovers down 2 turns from the factory preset so that 1.5" of "threads" we're showing (they come preset at 1.25" of thread showing). EDIT - After the front end settled I turned the adjustment collar on the coil-overs down some more to 1.75" of thread showing. This got me back to my original lift height. Looks good and still drives great:



The rear was a little more complicated than I thought as you have to drill out 1 large rivet on the back side of the factory leaf in order to fit the Icon progressive AAL. I also wanted to keep my factory overload leaf in which required drilling out 1 more rivet on the front of each factory overload to make it all fit. Here's a pic of the rear all buttoned up, took about 3 hours:


Here are my pre and post measurements:

Pre-Lift Hub to Fender:
Driver Front: 20.5"
Passenger Front: 21"
Driver Rear: 21.75
Passenger Rear: 22"

Post-Lift Hub to Fender:
Driver Front: 23.25"
Passenger Front: 23.75"
Driver Rear: 24.25
Passenger Rear: 24.25"

This left me with about .5 - 1" of rake, which I happen to like.

NO RUBBING, NO TRIMMING, NO VIBES - DRIVES AMAZING!! (slightly stiffer but still nice and soft).

UPDATE 1/28/16: Got my new Grille in from Rad Industries and got it installed. I also got my 31.5" SR Light bar and Apex Light brackets installed. I worked with Chris at Apex (great guy) and ended up being the tester truck for his new 2016 Flush mounts. These things are beefy and awesome.



Next on my list is to figure out something for the rear chrome bumper, and maybe the badges.

Aren't your wheels 17 X 7 ???

I didn't know you could put a tire that wide on that 7" wide rim

Thanks! It's been fun so far. Yah, BFG recommends a 7.5"-9" wide rim for that tire but lots of precedent with guys running that same set up so I didn't worry about it too much.

 

nice work so far. should adjust your passenger side down 5/16" to even out the lean.

 

if all the cool kids are running 285s then I should too. Thanks ... Not big on having to do metal cutting so the tires don't scrub which is why I need to get a new truck. Looking to get a new 16 DC OR LB this summer

What is a fair asking price for OEM rims and tires that will be on my 2016-TRD-OffRoad 4x4. I went with the same tires as you did BFG 285-70R-17 and the 4runner tfd pro 17" black rims also as you did!! I aslo will be having the Toytech- Fox Ultimate kit installed. My ? To you and anyone else is do i need spacers to complete the look/ride quality. This is my first attempt at this, i wanna get it right. These parts are expensive, and so was the truck!!! I never touched my 2008 trd offrd 4x4, so this has been an 8 year wait! Thanks for everyones time and helpful advise!!

 

I was wondering the same thing. And I have not seen any 285/70/17's on these wheels before.

My eyes must be playing tricks on me. These tires don't appear to fill the wheel wells as much as 285's typically do on a 2016.

 

Looks great! Quicksand looks sweet with black wheels. Any alignment issues? Wasn't sure if the 3rd gens are any different than the 2nd's trying to get good numbers after lift.

 

Awesome. I'm sure it will look great when your done! I asked $600 for my OEM off-road rims which I thought was a good but fair price.

I'm sure you'll love the Fox Ultimate kit. I've never used it but not sure you can really go wrong there...it's top of the line. IMO you won't need spacers at all and I would just stick to the adjustable coil-overs without anything else on top. My Icon 2.5's upfront are similar and I think they ride awesome while still giving plenty of lift. There's a Lifted '16 Tacoma's thread on here that has lots of good info about different types of lifts, etc. May want to pose the question to those guys as I know there are some Fox guys on there that could chime in. Best of luck and you'll have to post some pics when you get done!

 

There are quite a few that run this set up if you look around the forum (natestheboss, Denver2890, JerryTaco ran them for a while and many more). Like I mentioned, it's technically out of spec as BFG recommends a 7.5" rim but based on my research it should be fine. The only consideration I've found is for those who want to air down and run them at low pressure run a higher risk of blowing the bead - not something I'm really into. The tire shop didn't have any issues getting them mounted or anything.

Could be the pic or could be that I adjusted the coil-overs to 2.75" of lift up front and left the factory overload leaf in the rear where as many guys are running the Icon's at 2.25" of lift and removing the factory overload. I'm not anywhere near rubbing the cab mount, part of that is the lift and part is the offset on the rims - these rims stick out slightly more than the factory OR rims but far less than most aftermarket rims. This keeps them tucked under the fender more than many and keeps them from rubbing on the cab mount so easily.

 

Good question! It goes into Toyota for an alignment tomorrow. My local tire shop said their computer wasn't updated for the 2016 alignment specs and wouldn't do it. I'm guessing I'm going to have a hard time getting the caster in spec with the coil-overs adjusted to 2.75". I know many running stock UCA's can align just fine at 2.25" upfront but thinking I'll be past the limit with where I'm at now. Going to give it a go and if it won't align then I'll go ahead and buy some tubular UCA's, at which point it will align without issue for sure. Hoping I don't have to do that but thinking that I likely will - I'll know more tomorrow.

 

Thanks for the reply. I found Denver2890's build after posting here. What you're saying about the wheels makes sense, too. This truck is also riding on 285/70/17's but the tires look so much bigger.

 

Woody79, thanks for your quick feed back!! Your super nice, i definitly will be posting pics, delear is doing all work before i take deliver, i will have them check alinement and any other issues that my suspension/lift/tires/ rims may cause!

 

Update here - took it in to the dealership for an alignment this morning, they put it on the rack only to find out that their alignment machine didn't have the 2016 specs loaded in it yet either...they have to have the company that makes the machine come out on Monday and load the new specs in. Will try next week.
