Yesterday I was driving some back roads in Missouri (very hilly) and going down some of the steeper grades, the truck seemed to downshift and rev really high (like 3.5 - 4k rpms). Is this normal? Some sort of downhill assist? Can it be turned off? Does this put unnecessary stress on the drive train? Thanks in advance for the input.

where you using the cruise control? This is usually normal and not really a concern. Can be annoying while driving though. Should smooth out a little with these new transmissions once they "learn"

I have felt it too. Numerous trucks that I have had had this feature. I don't know if it can be turned off. Im sure someone will have an answer.

Yeah, 2nd gens do that too, but the revs don't go that high. Maybe 2500-3000 tops.

Drives me insane. If I want to downshift, I'll downshift. 95+% of the time when it does it for me going down a hill I didn't want it to. On mine, going from D to N and back to D really quick will put it in the highest possible gear again.

Part of it is to give you more control while driving. Also helps reduce wear on your brakes. Going down mountains my f150 drops a few gears and will rev around 4,500-5,000. Most vehicles will do the same. Only need to be concerned if it's shifting hard going into the gears, temp raises drastically, ect.

I wouldn't recommend putting it in neutral, you put more stress on the torque converter and tranny when you throw it back into drive at those speeds

Thanks for the input guys. This is my first automatic transmission so sorry for being a bit ignorant about these things. Never had this problem with a standard so it seemed odd to me

In a standard I do it all the time. If I'm on a steep grade I'll shift to a lower gear so I don't have to ride the breaks for miles.

Same here I love down shifting. Always control the vehicle, never let it control you

If it's anything like my 2nd gen and 3rd gen, it goes away. My 3rd gen only took about 1,000 miles to 'figure it out', the second gen took about 5,000.
    Drive Clyde.

you have that auto shift option. you know, when you flip the shifter to the left and can manually put it in whatever gear you want. You can drop it into 6th gear.

Seems like a "engine break" type of rev. Deff holds my speed down steep hills. I wonder if it part of new controls for steep hills off road.

It does not work exactly like that. If you drop it into "6" it doesn't just shift to 6th. Basically you are telling the transmission it's "allowed" to use up to 6th. In theory this wouldn't have any effect on the situation in question, in practice I have not tried it.

That's not how that works. Putting it into 6 only tells the tranny it can go up to 6. That is a max gear selector, it does not turn an auto into a manual. It's basically like D, D1, D2, or low range on some vehicles.

I asked about this the other day. There is no mention of this behavior in the manual and it seems to pick random hills/speeds to do it. Its really cool when it kicks in on a steep hill .
