The Dakar rally kicks off Jan 3rd in Argentina. It's hard to get news about it in the U.S. but it never the less interests me.

Does Robby Gordon still drive that bad ass 4 x 2 Hummer? OP any idea where we can more in depth coverage other than the end of day 30 min review?

 

I know. I figured out how to stream Eurosport once, but I tried to do it again and it's gotten spammy. You'd think NBC sports or someone here would at least do a webTV thing or something.

Looks like a Hummer front end with a Ford F-150 bed. Topped with a roof from a Range Rover

 

It does look a bit dorky, but for some private shop to compete with OEM race teams is pretty amazing. Toyota's budget is more than RG has made his entire life just for this one race. It's retarded how much the manufacturers spend on Dakar.

 

It's a really big thing.... Except state side. I did like the Africa Theatre a bit better than Argentina

 

Me too. The year they cancelled it I was planning on going. Had taken vacation and everything. Boo... Robby said something like "I'm from LA, I'm not worried about people shooting at me." Bravo sir.

I watched this Documentary of Robby Gordon and his team building that Gordini in prep for Dakar, pretty awesome and an insane amount of work went into it all..

 

I shall call it the Humrover - 150

 

Ya it's bananas to think that he could even compete with those other dudes. Most Dakar teams train year round just for this one race. Robby races like four different series, competitively, plus all the TV stuff etc. Hardest working man in motorsports for sure. I've met him a couple times, and even had him in my rearview on a track (briefly!) he's a decent guy to boot.

Yeah just seeing all of what into it and what it takes to even go and be competitive there is mind boggling.. You definitely need some deep pockets and tons of top notch help with the right setup/shop to do it all.. He seemed to be a good dude.

Today, at 11AM, the competitors will go through the Podium at Tecnópolis and then leave for the Prologue. The results of this short pre-stage will define the start order for Stage 1. That is why I love Robby. He knows the only reason he is there is the fans. Without them he would have no sponsors, and not be racing. He is #1 to the fans!

 

Just set my DVR to record all the highlights. Seems like they used to have pretty good coverage of it back in the day. Now there like nothing other than highlights at like 4am. Glad I have a DVR now.
