33" Duratracs - Any Input?

This is true and it also depends on which brand. Lay off MT/Rs lol, I love my MT/Rs! Best tire I've ran yet and I'm on my second set.

I love them! I never knocked the MTR . That being said they are a lot more money and more aggressive than the Duratrac!

I might try them sometime in the future if I go to a really wide tire.

 

I paid 223 per tire for my 285/75/16's, pretty good price for them. They have better road manners than the Dura Tracs too. I love the wet road traction they grip really well due to the A/T strip in the tread. They plow through snow and they're tough as hell.

Just giving you an option to check out! Really watch out for reviews on the Duratrac on new sets. Something about that tire makes it's wear really effect the performance. They are great for the first half of life and then... most guys ditch them because they can't even hold the road in the rain. It's weird and I've seen lots of explanations for it online but I've never come across a solid explanation that makes total sense as to why they loose most of what makes them great.

Just a question here but what are your expectations from this tire? Is your truck a DD? Do you need to stick to A/T or can you go for more tire like a MTR? Is money the limiting factor?

I'd say unless your truck is a DD more than anything and you are sticking with A/T's plus trying to get a tire at a great price then the Duratrac is not your best option. You've torn sidewalls and you need solid life long traction. Those aren't the Duratracs strengths.

 

Yup. It's a good tire overall though a couple of guys I know have swore off them though I honestly don't know why... You don't even want to know Canadian prices are on tires right now .... I got a deal on my Coopers for just over 320 a tire installed 255/80/r17

 

Good grief that's insane! The Coopers are an awesome tire, but wow that's a lot for a tire that size.

 

It's all BS currency conversion ans some authorized gouging of Canadian customers. That was at an 85 cent dollar to IIRC... right now our dollar is only worth 71 cents to the US dollar. Cooper actually does okay to Canadians compared to some other companies on MSRP pricing. Anyways, sorry for the sidetrack OP!

 

This is my DD. I purchased it new in February 2015 with 21 miles on it. I hit 10,800 miles today. So far I've been off-road twice (my first two trips). Today's tire laceration could be absolutely random bad luck.

Just looked up the MTR's. Goodyear says MSRP is $279.00 US for 285/75/16. The Duratrac in the same size is $231.00 MSRP.

 

Buy once cry once. I know, that's said too often, but honestly there is a lot more to the MTR than the Duratrac.

The Coopers will probably be right smack in the middle for pricing.

I've read and seen a bunch of great reviews on the Duratracs. I guess it all comes down to how worried I am about another lacerated sidewall, eh? Goodyear also has their "Adventure" tire which has the Kevlar sidewall as well but for the price of the Duratracs.

 

Coopers in that tire size price out for less money than the Duratracs actually when I check Kalispell pricing on Discount tire...

Edit: Nevermind, I done der messed up and the pricing went all funky. I have no clue on the price because it won't come up again when I try to search it!

 

Most reviews are written in the first 5K of driving. Honestly that's when the Duratrac shines.

Check the reviews of the Duratrac compared to the ST Maxx on sites that sell both... Just saying. I found almost a whole star of difference when I was looking and most of it was due to reviewers that reviewed the tire AFTER owning it instead of right when they bought it/tried it the first time.

 

So the ST Maxx is like $235 at DiscountDirect for the 285/75/16 size. Says it's a 3 play with their "ArmorTek" blah blah.

I'd really love to find a site that actually tests the tires rather than taking random reviews from schmucks online. And I'd love to know the actual differences in the tires without the marketing verbiage.

 

That will actually make the rubbing worse but its a necessary evil for running tires wider than 10.5".

 

I would be all over the ST MAXX if they were snowflake rated

Tirerack.com sells the 285/75/16 MT/R for $251 right now.

 

Since this truck is your DD I would look at the Cooper ST Maxx or the new BFG KO2. You're mileage will take a hit with the MT/Rs.

 

I recall the KO2's being at the top of my list months ago. But I decided on the Michelin highway tires at the time (not thinking I'd be off-roading anytime soon).

Anything I get to replace the Michelins will hit my MPGs. Especially if I go 33's.

Since winter hit (cold temps in October) I've seen a 2 MPG drop with no other changes. No matter how grandpa I drive I went from 19 MPGs to 17 MPGs. Crazy.
