My toyota dealer just quoted me 40$ for a rear main seal for my 1999 3RZ. Anyone have any advice on going with aftermarket? If not Im gonna go with OEM.

I couldnt find any rms install threads for 3RZ, will check back if I find one

Go OEM. You dont want to worry about ever replacing it again, especially after all the work involved to change it.

Try BMAparts.com, youll need to call them, theyre located in Los Angeles.

Installed the rear main seal today. Everything seemed to go well except I have two worries:

    1. When I pressed in the seal there wasnt a point where it seated; I just pressed it in to match the seal that was in there: about fluah with the inner part of the chamfered edge in the housing.

    2. When I put the housing/seal assembly into the back of the engine it seemed like the seal was much tighter at the bottom. Like when I pressed it in the bottom didnt want to go then finally went. Seems like that would mean the top was more loose???? Maybe Im just stressing but other than that it looks really good.

Im doing the oil pan seal tomorrow, ugh, so i wont have the engine filled back up with oil until saturday.

When your rear main seal is leaking it's a good idea to pull the oil pan & replace the rear main brg., appears yours is pretty loose & flooding the already worn out seal.

What do you mean rear main brg.? I dropped the front diff today and re-did the oil pan seal. Cleaned everything on the rear main seal housing as well. Brand new seal on every surface.

Does anyone know if theres supposed to be a lip on the rear main seal housing hole?

what is the rear main bearing? Either way I have the tranny all bolted up, just need to attach the drivelines and fill the truck with oil tomorrow morning. Hopefully everything goes well. Also, the rear main wasnt leaking I just replaced it since I was doing the clutch

It's a really big seal and hard to get it to sit perfectly flush and even, but its really important so take the time to get it right.

Also, a good tip is to press it in to a different depth than the stock seal. The lip of the old seal will have created a groove on the crankshaft, so make sure that the new seal rides on a different section of the crankshaft so it doesn't leak.

Just a little lithium grease, and find a pipe fitting or socket that is the exact size of the seal. Tap it in and youre good.

I wish i had sockets that big! The rear main in the 3rz is about 4 inches in diameter

I used a 2 inch long piece of pipe and welded a bar across it so I could tap the center and drive the seal in straight.

Just be sure the lip is properly started over the crankshaft.
