spark it!

Looking to gain a couple of extra gpms. My Reg cab prerunner currently gets 22mph If I baby the whole tank. I want to replace the plugs. The truck currently has 54k miles, and Im not sure if the dealership replaced them when I bought the truck. What would you guys recommend and do they come pre-gapped. Just curious why dont these trucks get better mpgs. Gear ratio, weight? 4 bangers by law should get no less than 25mpg in my opinion. This is why I bought the 4 and not a 6 but hell sounds like I should have gotten the 6.

 

There is a lot of reasons and causes to cause a drop in MPG's, winter gas mix is a big one.
I would suggest replacing your plugs, they should be replaced every 30,000 miles, no matter if they are long life or not. Chances are, that they have not been replaced yet. And I would check the gap on them just to make sure, even if they say it is pre-gapped.

 

lot of other thing could nibble mpg down. fyi i get 26mpg at 65 mph or so in the summer in my 4wd so you truck being 200 lb +/- should get a bit better.

check o2 sensors ?
tires to your taste, mine are at 38-40 unless I need snow traction
air filter plugged? coulda sucked leaves in?
how are you diff oils and trans oil?
are you tires mud terrain vs asr?

btw i lose 3 mpg to winter blend and weather, glad to get 22 in the fall/winter

Yea its a 2006 prerunner sr5. I am currently running the toyo country all terrains. I havent checked the O2 sensors yet and I will replace the plugs. As far as the lubes im sure its all stock fluid.

 

the 4cyl shouldn't need the plugs changed till like 110-115k miles according to the service schedule. I only get like 19mpg per highway with my 4cyl 4x4 because i'm always running 70+ mph...and i know nothing is wrong with my truck because it only has 8k miles on it and its always been like that.

 

ive heard the 4.0 gets better mpg than the 4cyl,mine is 09 dc 4x4 sport....gets 22.5 with a light foot.

 

Well kind of, however if you drove both trucks exactly the same at 55mph then the 4cyl would yield better mpg. The 4cyl will always consume less fuel, but if both trucks are going 75 down the highway mine will turn 3k rpms while gearing could allow the 6cyl to turn 2500 rpms, therefore making the 6cyl consume less fuel in that situtation.
