Doin the tear down... Pinion flange is wobbly as hell. Looks like the culprit!

 

Blown pinion? Sheesh.

 

Is that your orginal diff? Did you regear it?

 

I believe it's the original since he has factory 4.56's, but he did just put an ARB in it in the spring.

Did you check the gear setup when you put the arb in it? You know that the backlash changes when that happens right?

I did the set up for him and yeah i made sure the back lash was good. Diff did great in moab and never made a noise. My guess is running a front tire low in 4x4 at speed on the read had the rear diff over driving the front and that put a lot of load on the pinion bearings causing high diff temps and premature wear.

 

The taco started making a horrible squealing yesterday, started back up again this morning. I'm pretty sure it's not a belt because it sounds like it's coming from the rear and it only makes the sound when I'm moving, can't get it to squeal when I'm parked. Seems to only happen between 1k-2k RPM and seems to get better when I accelerate and worse when I take my foot off the gas. Could it be a frozen brake maybe? I park in the garage so it's not like it gets that cold.

with a ujoint that makes noise usually comes play and vibration.

 

Sounds expensive. There does seem to be some vibration when braking, but I figured that was just my brakes.

 

vibrations while braking is not a U-joint and U-joints are cheap, unless you're paying some one like me to do them. The good news is problems don't get better they get worse so it's going to get easier to find and more expensive. Just ask Mark.

 

Mine didn't. Just screamed just like what she says. Thought it was the carrier bearing and it wasn't. Just the rear U joint.

 

Sounds like I'm going to have to take it in for diagnosis.

Find a drive shafts place they will be cheaper than stealyota.
