beefier rear help needed!!!

New around this forum and also new to the Toyota platform. I just recently blew my rear end in the rain with the e-locker locked (Lesson learned figure it was like my ol tru trac lol). I installed a newly rebuilt 3rd member and blew it playing in the dirt yesterday.

Coming from a Nissan Titan, I'm pretty disappointed cause I beat the sh*t out of that truck up for a half a decade and only to replace the 3rd member for an upgrade. I have quite a few off road miles on my belt and losing faith in toyota's "quality"

I am planning on doing the Tundra or Ford 9 conversion in the future but for now I'd like a beefier 3rd member to keep cost down. I have to keep my rear axle for now cause of my custom shock and strap mounts. I've been looking online but I figure you guys would know best. All suggestions and comments welcomed and thanked in advance

First blow out is my fault with out a doubt, second time is questionable cause it's not something that I haven't done before. Went through some whoops, front completely tucked, rear fully drooped, landed and broke it.

ohh yeah, I'm beginning to think that the Tacoma can't handle a whippin by me. If I do the tundra conversion, I might as well do the Ford 9 which is race proven.

 

Good grief, man. 99.99999% of off-road obstacles can be conquered through technical driving and taking it slow. I don't what you're doing, but I have been off-roading for a while, as it sounds like you have, as well, and that sounds like some trucks that are being run and gunned through everything.

Let us know what you end up doing, and a build thread would be awesome. :-D

I totally agree with you but I don't do slow when playing in the dirt. (after scouting) I'm not a crawler but a prerunner. I soo "run and gunned" And that's why I broke. Hopefully I can take over the previous owners build page, I'd hate to start all over. Thanks for chiming in.

It is fully built for a leaf sprung truck but still needs a lot of work and tuning. I driving it like I stole it. I should be a little nicer to this taco lol.

sounds like you need a currie rear axle that is setup to bolt up the stock drums onto. I know its been done and thats your best option as you seem to be just beating the ever living shit out of your truck.

I've seen on this forum a lot of guys jumping at the dunes and whatnot and no one has mentioned upgrading third members. Some guys may have fully trussed axle housings but they still use the Toyota third member I'm pretty sure. Stuff like this...



Maybe if the rear suspension isn't up to snuff it could introduce large shock loads to the drive line. What I mean is maybe you need a nice plush spring under axle setup with lots of up travel to provide a nice soft landing. And some burly shocks to match.
