Last night I was on the road leading to my sister's home and I was running late. There was a car in front of me and I may have been traveling too close to her because I was running a little late. I pulled up in front of my sister's house and left the car. The car that was ahead of me pulls into a driveway at a house across the street (it was my sister's neighbor).

I go in and have dinner with my family. When I return to the car around 9:30pm with my wife and kids, there were eggs smashed all over the driver's side and windshield of the car. I immediately went to the house across the street and rang the bell. This woman answers the bell and we have this dialogue.

"Someone egged my wife's car. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?"
    "Oh, call the police."
"I will be filing a report. You don't have any teenagers in there, do you?"
"Yes, but they were with me all night."

I then left her home and called the cops. I told the responding officer what happened (including the part about me following her) and how I came out and found egg on the car. He took a report, took photos of the car, then rang her bell and spoke to her. He said that she could deny vandalizing the car (and likely would) and that not much else could be done unless I had video footage or a better description of the vehicle).

I left at that point to go home and washed the egg off the car. When I got outside this morning, I noticed that there was some paint damage on the car that might not be able to get buffed out. I told my sister about the incident and she was not surprised. She said the woman is frequently angry and yelling at her kids. I am 95% certain that it was the neighbor that did the damage to the car. I am pissed, and I'm looking for advice on how to handle this.

    I'm thinking the following:

    1. Tell her there was a dash cam on the car and I have footage of someone from her home vandalizing the car and will share it with the cops unless she pays for the damage). That would be a bluff because I have no footage and will probably get a dash cam in the future because of this.
    2. Leave it alone and forget about it.

What would you all do in this situation? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

(BTW, i wasn't my Tacoma, but I'm 100% certain my reaction would have been 10x worse if it was my beloved truck that was damaged).

Because you don't have any way to prove who did it, file a claim or pay out of pocket. It doesn't seem like bluffing about a dash cam would get you anywhere except a more pissed off neighbor.

That's what I think, but I'm still really irritated about the incident. I guess sh't happens.

I will admit part of me thought about vigilante justice, but I'm not a kid anymore. I'm an adult with major responsibilities (career and family) that I'm not trying to screw up by getting caught up in revenge fantasy.

I'd just let it go, no sense in getting all worked up about it when you can't prove it..Maybe just maybe it was a random egging. Maybe a car full of a holes drove down the street and egged your car.. You'll probably never know.:notsure:

#1 just brings you down to her level. Lying. Take the high road.

Folks have been executed and are in jail based on circumstantial evidence, which is all you have. 'Knowing' exactly who your vandal is one thing. Guessing (even a high odd logical guess) is another.

Let it go, it was only eggs. Be glad it wasn't rocks or paint.

If the neighbor's kids DID do it, they most likely won't do it again since you confronted the mother and had the cops there. I say forget about it and move on.

When I first moved in at my 1st house someone egged my wife Nissan too I'm pretty sure it was the neighbor across the street did it they drive ghetto cars and have teenagers but lack of evidence can't do anything 'bout it so just let go. Tired of ghetto neighbors so bought newer house sale old house and move on

I guess I'm the ass of the group because if you'd come to my house and asked me and then about my kids I would have told you to fuck off.

Who knows if she (or her family) had anything to do with it? And you're giving thought to going back to her house...and now you've documented it?!?! Borderline harassment.

Sorry your car got egged but, that's why you pay for insurance. Fix it the LEGAL and honest way that best suits you and move on.

Besides, you've already stated you were tailgating her...my guess is a just/only egged car could have become much worse if she'd made a sudden stop..and it would have been your fault.

I do have to wonder tho...

Was the car you tailgated hers or at her house after you got egged?

What good does it do police to know a better discription of the car you tailgated if you didn't see that same car involved in the egging incident?

Wouldn't the police have told her you had a dash cam when they spoke with her?

I appreciate your response in the interest of balanced feedback. I am not interested in blowing this out of proportion, but I posted on here to vent and to express frustration. I acknowledge my fault in this, but def. don't think it warrants getting my car damaged.

I will leave it alone, but I will be putting a camera on the car in the event of future issues.

I'm pretty sure it was her car because it was a dark-colored SUV that matched the one sitting in her driveway, but the point is moot right now. While I think she was involved, it's all circumstantial right now unless she decides to try it again.

100% agree that getting your car vandalized is bullshit & agree with (always) taking the high road man.

Glad you didn't take my feedback personal. I remember as a youngster having something similar happen. We lived pretty remote & a logging company had been hired to clear an ajacent tract of land (to my parents place). One Saturday morning at about 5:30am some angry (owner) visited my parents and asked if they had any teenaged sons. Sure enough they did (me)...he point blank accused me of filling his fuel tanks with sand. He was dead wrong and my parents knew it but, this guy was hell bent man. My parents weren't nearly as polite in telling him to leave as I would have been in their shoes. I'll just say shit isn't always the easy & obvious choice.

Best of luck on getting your truck situation resolved.
