I don't have a problem with the new engine just the size.....
They could have made a 4.0 or larger with the same tech and not increase production cost and got the same or better mpg...
Or offer a small v8 that they all ready make....
A bigger engine working less can get the same mpg or better than a smaller engine working harder and tow more efficiently....
The 3.5 is to meet gov regs, not the best solution for a mid sized truck...
3.5 are just too low on torque for good towing the 4.0 was a really good size and out towed most small V8 domestics...
My runners got 10-12 towing and 19-22 mpg mixed, which is as good or better than the 2016 tacoma....
They just need a larger engine option for people that need it...
I don't need a huge tundra to pull 4000 lbs...
I need a modern tacoma that can pull better and get better MPG...
With modern electrons it is very easy to have more than 1 mode, normal, mpg, towing/sport....
But the gov decided that a car sized engine is the best solution for all vehicles...

I think the 3.5 is a good base engine but not the best for a truck.....

3.5 is too small, yet the 190hp 3.4 was fine for years.

This thread is like when my wife ask me what I think about her shoes or what I want for dinner. She doesn't care what I think and neither do I....and that's all I have to say about that.

    Oh and it's the government....

As I keep saying, give my the dyno sheets from both the 4.0 and the 3.5 and use actual evidence to try to make your case that the 3.5 is at some form of deficit.

Just cause you think it's a lesser motor doesn't make it so. At least those that own one have have some basis for argument.

If you think the motor is crap, don't buy it. I'll happily enjoy mine everyday, tow some things that many seem to think impossible, and enjoy the 'drastic' lack of power...

Like I've been saying. It's not an engine issue. Shift manually and the 3.5 blows the 4.0 out of the water. The "lack of power" people are experiencing is due to the transmissions eagerness to up shift to too high of a gear too soon and lock up TCC too soon

Payload assist rockets perhaps? The name seems to suggest some usefulness to the Tacoma.

You are missing the point, the 3.4 was a truck engine. The 3.5 is supposively a new engine that hasn't been used for truck applications. The 3.4 made 190hp at 4800rpm and 220ftlbs at 3600rpm. I don't have a problem with the size of the 3.5...just where it makes power. 278hp at 6000rpm and 265ftlbs at 4600rpm.

I wouldnt be surprised if the 3.4 made more torque than the 3.5 at 3600rpm.

Simply said...I am disapoonted the 2016 makes more hp than torque. A truck should have more torque than hp. I would literally buy anything other than a truck if I wanted more hp.

I see what bluet is saying, i think it is a combination of CAFE and toyota making more of a profit.

There are tons of other options toyota could have gone with, that is all im saying.

Woa, no need to get your panties tied up in a bunch. I am not complaining, i am just stating the facts.

If you must know, I do plan on buying a pickup, I'm waiting for the 2017 tacoma to be released to see whats up with the trd pro, and the next gen tundra. Also waiting on the ridgeline. Even though it is none of your business.

Someone's a fanboy, no need to get butthurt. When was I ever complaining? I'm just stating my opinion and how you weren't getting the point. Last I heard it is a free country. Had nothing to do with displacement. 3.4 was a great engine. The 2016 Tacoma is heavier than the first and 2nd gen, but they lowered displacement. I'm not dissing the new engine, I'm just curious to see how it will do in the lobg run. I wouldn't buy the first year of a new model.

What is the torque curve of the 3.5?

The 4.0 made 266 at 4,000....another 600 rpm for the 3.5 really isn't that bad.

I'm not a fanboy, I actually prefer full size GMs. Im just speaking from an actual owners standpoint. This 3rd gen section of is so full of morons who have no fucking clue what they are talking about. They only know what they have read, which itself is only 2nd or 3rd hand data
