Why did they not use the 4.0 Dual VVT-i V6?

Yeah, I think people are making mountains out of mole hills. The amount of torque and where it is available in the rpm range, isn't all that much different than the 4.0

The test drive I took, the new engine seemed fairly strong to me.

 

But I do have a clue what I'm talking about. Dealer had no die cast of one...

 

I am just leaving my options open. I wouldn't be wasting my time on here if i wasn't interested in the new tacoma.

Yeah it is close...but the 4.0 just had way more torque than hp. 236hp and 266tq. 2016 278hp and 265tq (less at a higher rpm)...i just like the idea of having more torque than hp...that is the way it should be in a truck imo. Either way it is super close.

 

So what if the 3.5 has 250ft-lb available from 2000 rpm up aka a relatively flat torque curve?

 

So you don't care if a truck can only go 30mph with 57hp as long as it has torque

That would be nice, but I havn't heard of anyone who has put it on a dyno yet.

Obviously it has to be balanced...I would have been happier with say 260hp and 280ftlbs...change the cam profiles or whatever to generate more torque and leaa hp at a lower rpm.

Listen, all i'm saying is im slightly disaapointed. I am sure plenty of other members agree with me. I was really looking forward to this generation after 10 years of waiting. I don't just care about the performance numbers, if i did i would of had bought one of the new gm trucks.

I thought after 10 years until the next gen they would have done something more. Think about it, all of this has increased mpg by about 2mpg. Like i said plenty of other options, ford coming out with 10 speed auto, gm with 8 speed auto, honda pilot with 9 speed auto, toyota is just behind and they had so much time to do a refresh. Could have gone with newer 4.0 with dual vvti with the 8 speed autos in the lexus. That would have made a huge difference in terms of mpg.

Either way it is a toyota, therefore it will have the QDR that i am looking for.

 

Drive a 3.6 GM. you'll love the torque the Toyota 3.5 makes afterwards. I drive GMs all day until I get in my toyota to go home

 

The 4.3 in the gm makes more torque than hp. Every v8 has more torque than hp.

Also I am pretty sure the 3.5 is not all new as it has been used in some of the lexus models.

The 4.0 in my jeep makes more torque.

Well the 4.3 is in the silverado right now. Imagine if it was in a midsize.

 

I suppose you haven't looked at the V6 NA offerings from ford and dodge

 

It never will be. We don't even sell them in the full size

 

I am well aware that there are other v6s in trucks that have more hp than torque. And that 3.6l v6 pentastar blows, i drive a ram promaster for my job and it is terrible. Just because there are not many v6s with more torque does not mean it can't be done...if it was done before and it is currently done with v8s.

Yeah no kidding it doesn't sell in a fullsize...who wants a v6 in a fullsize? They make all their money from the 5.3 and 6.2. Now if they were to put the 4.3 in the colorado and canyon that would have been much better than the diesel.. I can't imagine that doing we in the u.s market.

From reading this whole post I think I understand where you are coming from. What I don't think you recognize is this 3.5 comes with two different fuel delivery cycles. The first to deliver best economy and the second for power and torque.
This would explain why the torque is so high in the rpm band as well as the reaction off the line.
The European market doesn't have to deal with the emission standards or CAFE. They run way more diesels over there as well including a 4.5L diesel that would make the tundra beyond awesome.
The dodge v6 is not a bad motor but it isn't designed to be a torque motor. Neither is the Tacoma. Honestly if you want a do all truck that is great off road as well as super high mpg and power. Your asking for a diesel hybrid that hasn't been made yet.

Regarding the arguments made. If you want to be able to choose your own opinions then you have to be able to accept someone else's opinion on the same subject without retaliation. It then stops being an argument and becomes a discussion.
My opinion is they picked the wrong motors for off roading and towing but picked a great motor and transmission for the other 95% of the people who use the truck.
If your considering a ridgeline my only warning is with their transmissions being based off minivan technology that seems to break down a lot. But that might change one day
