I wish. Living in a development with a HOA sucks. I have a feeling we'll sell in a few years and buy some land.

They have good and bad traits. There is a development next to ours, same style homes, built the same time with no HOA. Neighborhood looks like shit. Cars on blocks on the streets, boats and trailers everywhere, houses are kept up and lawns look like hell. We looked at that development first and even though homes were cheaper, you could tell the development was going downhill fast. We bought here because it is a huge friendly, family neighborhood. Everyone has kids, we have one on the way. So it's a great starter home.

Ideally I want 3-4 acres, one acre cleared to build a 2000-2400 sq ft house and a 40' x 60' pole building. But, I also need around $400-$500k to do so haha. Only paid $175k for what I have now.

Looking at buying a house this Spring and strongly considering jumping the border into PA lol. Just not sure if I'm ready to be that far away from city life.

Had friends who made the move from the city suburbs to just over the state line into PA. They eventually hated the long job commute back into the city, and driving 1/2 hour to get to various shopping destinations. PA doesn't clear their roads well or timely when it snows. And, power outages galore, especially a hardship when their only household utility was electricity.

After a few years, they moved back to the suburbs.

I'm still researching everything, but it looks like MD has higher income tax with lower property tax; whereas PA has higher property tax with lower income tax... considering the houses I'm looking at and my current pay, I think the taxes would be just about a wash... which leaves gas/commute and property value as the big financial factor.

I didn't consider the power outages or road issues, but I'm not opposed to a snow day every now and then...

As a 25 year old I think my largest concern is entertainment and being able to socialize.

Its not for everyone thats for sure. I feel more at home out in the sticks than surrounded by people. But different strokes for different folks.

Maybe check York? Its like a city but not Baltimore lol or just look further away from the city like Columbia or Annapolis. I guess it also depends on what is making you want to move.

Agreed, the idea of being able to shoot some clays in my backyard or on a neighbor's farm sounds glorious, but I do enjoin venturing out to the bars every so often.

Reason why I want to move is a culmination of 2 things: restoring this house in Canton is almost finished, and I think Baltimore property value will somewhat peak this year. Secondly, I'm not living in the Canton house while I restore it, and the parents are driving me bonkers after living on my own for 7 years.

Oh if that's the case, just check out Frederick or My Airy... Still close enough to bars but far enough from the city. Also depends on how often you visit the bars or if you find your place at home on a farm with a bon fire friends and drinks...

A lot of the farms are being developed though so I fear that is a dying dream... Even the one behind my house has been sold for homes.
